AEW has raised the stakes for next week’s Dynamite by making the TBS Championship picture even more unpredictable. With rivalries continuing to spill out of control, the champion doesn’t have the luxury of focusing on just one challenger when the title is defended in Baltimore. The blockbuster championship match was officially announced on the Aug. 12 episode of AEW Dynamite, but the road to the contest has been anything but straightforward. After weeks of interference and shifting alliances, all four competitors will finally collide under one roof. AEW confirms four-way TBS Championship match for Dynamite Mick Foley announced on behalf of AEW President Tony Khan that TBS Champion Maya World will defend her title against Kris Statlander, Hikaru Shida, and Persephone on the Aug. 19 edition of AEW Dynamite. The show will take place at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena in Baltimore, Maryland. The four-way bout comes after weeks of escalating tension between the competitors. Maya World has been fighting to keep hold of the championship she won from Hikaru Shida at AEW Redemption. Nevertheless, the target on her back has only continued to grow. Shida has repeatedly attempted to tilt the odds in her favor. This includes passing a kendo stick to CMLL World Women’s Champion Persephone during an earlier title match. Meanwhile, Statlander has often stepped in as the equalizer, preventing Persephone from capitalizing on outside interference and earning a measure of revenge after her earlier loss in the Survival of the Fittest tournament. Rather than allowing the conflict to continue through post-match brawls and outside interference, AEW has placed all four women in the same match. With no shortage of bad blood between the challengers and the champion, the four-way format could create opportunities that wouldn’t exist in a traditional singles contest. Before next week’s title clash, AEW will also tape this Saturday’s Collision following Dynamite in Las Vegas, with several Continental Challenge Cup matches, Mercedes Moné versus Zayda Steel, and an AEW World Trios Championship match already announced.
