IndyCar ‘definitely would consider’ Supercars collaboration

It was revealed in 2024 that IndyCar had spoken with Supercars about an Adelaide collaboration before the Adelaide Grand Final was born. IndyCar has flirted with a return to Australia ever since the series’ last visit in 2008 when it raced on the streets of the Gold Coast. Speaking on Speed with Harvick and Buxton, Boles was asked whether IndyCar would think about working with Supercars. “We definitely would consider that, and we’ve had several high-level conversations over the last several years about doing that,” said Boles. “It just needs to fit right in our schedule, it also needs to fit right in the TV broadcast, which in a lot of ways you could make that work with an Australian race, it could work really well over here. “It’s certainly something that we would explore. Again, it just has to be the right promoter, the right location, the right time of the year. “A whole bunch of pieces that have to really go into that, but that is definitely a place we would look towards.” Before entertaining the idea of Australia, Boles said IndyCar was likely to look to Mexico and capitalise on the success of the series’ most popular driver Pato O’Ward. A race at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City has long been mooted but has yet to materialise. The series had hoped to race there in 2026 but was bogged down by the FIFA World Cup, which was held across Mexico, the United States and Canada. Brazil and Argentina have long been on the radar of IndyCar, and Boles said Japan was also a consideration given its strong links to engine supplier Honda. In any case, the most likely outcome for an international sojourn is a race closer to home. “We continue to explore the international piece,” said Boles. “I do see us having international races as part of our schedule in the future. “We’re still going to be a vastly, predominantly North American-based sport. “I wouldn’t be surprised if at some point in time you’ve got, in addition to Canada, maybe two other events that happen outside of the United States. They have to be the right events, they have to do some place that’s a true event. “Some place that makes sense for the teams to go, because it’s a challenge. You pack everything up and move everything on the road. “Even when NASCAR went to Mexico, just the nightmares of trying to travel to Mexico is challenging, and it does take out a big piece of your schedule on the front end and back end of that weekend. Those are things that we have to look at. “We’re definitely trying to find the right one. We’ve been to Australia, we’ve been to Japan, we’ve been to Brazil. Those are places that IndyCar has run in the past and those are certainly places that would be nice to go to again in the future. “We’ve run Japan in the past with Honda being around. If the right thing came about that’s certainly something we’d consider,” he added. “Right now, you’re going to see most of our international races either just outside of our borders here in the United States or somewhere in Central America.” IndyCar continues its season at Markham on August 17 (AEST).
