John Cena has shared a measured response to one of Hollywood’s most controversial recent decisions, offering an unexpected perspective on Warner Bros. Discovery shelving Coyote vs. Acme before the film eventually found its way back to theaters. While many criticized the move, the WWE star made it clear his view of the situation differs significantly. Nevertheless, the Hollywood star also acknowledged its frustrations. The live-action and animated film, which stars Cena as Acme Corporation’s attorney, releases in theatres on Aug. 28 after years of uncertainty. Its winding road has left plenty of fans talking. However, Cena’s comments suggest he prefers to focus on what he can control rather than the business decisions made behind closed doors. John Cena explains why Warner Bros.’ decision didn’t change his perspective Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Cena admitted that his opinion “isn’t the common one” when asked whether the film’s shelving changed how he viewed the movie industry. “I am hired by an employer to do a task, and it’s my job to prepare as much as I can, be early, be coachable, be passionate, and be reliable,” Cena asserted. “I do that and hope for the best. Those expectations are beyond my control, so it doesn’t make me view the business any differently. Keep in mind, it is the movie business.” Although Cena defended the business reality of the decision, he stressed that it doesn’t mean he agreed with it. “Sometimes, business decisions are things that we don’t see through the same lens. Of course, I want my work seen by an audience… But I don’t own my performance. I’m contracted to do a job, and the person who owns it gets to decide what happens with it.” To explain his point, Cena compared filmmaking to building a custom car for a private collector. “I can put my heart and soul into it… and you take the keys and put it in your garage for no one to see. You own it; you can do whatever you want with it.” Still, John Cena admitted the experience itself remained worthwhile, even if the movie never saw the light of day. “Even if the movie never saw the light of day… I got to be there on the ground with people who made me better and people I care about, and I got to do the thing.” Fortunately for the 17-time world champion and the rest of the cast, Coyote vs. Acme will finally hit theaters after Ketchup Entertainment acquired the film following Warner Bros. Discovery’s original decision to shelve it. Cena called the release “totally surreal” and “an absolute joy” before adding that it’s “a testament to the audience” that kept the movie alive for four years.
