Wednesday August 12th 2026 Newcastle United and Everton at Murrayfield. Written by Midlothian View Reporter, Adam Bowen Scotland welcomed Everton and Newcastle tonight at Scottish Gas Murrayfield. The Toon Army were everywhere in Edinburgh today with the odd blue shirt on the street. It was Newcastle who started the better side, dominating the ball and looking sharp however that all petered out in the 25th minute. Everton played the ball over the top with Barry using his strength immensely holding off one Newcastle defender before running onto the ball and nicking it past the next. Through on goal he looked good however Hall’s brilliant recovery challenge looked like it had ended the attack, however it only halted it as the boys in blue picked the ball up straight away feeding in Barry who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner. Not long after, Dewsbury Hall recieved the ball in the box turning his back to shield it when Joelintin went into the back of him, leading to an Everton penalty kick. It was calmly dispatched by Everton number ten Ndiaye. Everton went into the break 2-0 up. Coming out for the second half Newcastle seemed to change nearly their whole team. Again, they started the second half strong but not well enough as Everton started to get more of the ball. Everton had a shout for another penalty when Hackney was linking up well but felt he was pulled in the face when running in the box, leading to him falling to the ground. The referee didn’t see any issue with the incident. Everton were looking comfortable on the ball and in the 75th minute they worked it well into the box before Armstrong played the ball square just inside the 18 yard line in a central position with George taking it beautifully on the half turn and dispatching it well into the bottom left corner. Some Newcastle fans had seen enough and began to look for the exits. However, the fans that did stay were rewarded by a consolation goal after Murphy was played into the box, firing a ball across goal which Barnes managed to steer into the back of the net. A consolation was all it was and the game ended 3-1 to Everton with the eclipse shortly following the final whistle. Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle said that his team were on ‘a good level’ for the first 15, 20 minutes. He also said that he tried something different with Osula and Wissa playing together up front saying again that ‘in the first 15, 20 minutes it looked really really good’ however he mentioned that there are still two more games until he needs to make a final decision before their Premier League opener at home against Liverpool. In terms of captaincy, Joelinton was given the armband tonight following Bruno Guimaraes departure from the club this summer. When asked if he has decided on who will be the new club captain, Jaissle replied that he ‘is a lot closer’ but still not made a final decision. Tonight was a great test for both teams with a fantastic atmosphere as they prepare for their upcoming league campaigns. Tweet Share on Facebook
