Hipwood unlashes HUGE set shot from outside 50
WHAT A FINISH FROM RAFA!
Another turnover in the middle of the ground results in Lachie Neale hitting up Eric Hipwood right on the 50m arc.
There is a lot of commotion between Hipwood and the field umpire, who is adamant about lining him up properly.
He comes off a long run-up like Shoaib Akhtar at the Gabba 25 years ago, but sends the ball sailing straight through the middle of the two big sticks halfway up post height.
That's a massive goal.

Macdonald strikes as Watson turns provider
We've got a pulse from the Wizard!
Two Lions defenders go to ground right on the 50m arc, and that's suicidal when Nick Watson is around.
He picks up the footy and steams towards the goal, but does the team thing by passing to Connor Macdonald, who goals from close range.

Zorko is struggling after copping knee to the ribs
Dayne Zorko is absolutely in the wars tonight!
He goes back with the flight of the footy to try and take a courageous mark, but James Sicily is coming back the other way like a steam train.
Sicily's knee goes straight into Zorko's rib area and he's struggling, but stays out there.

Draper kicks goal straight out of ruck contest
Sam Draper is on his bike folks!
The Lions have a boundary throw-in deep in their forward 50 and Draper shoves Lloyd Meek out of the ruck contest and then snaps it home.
Draper's got six touches, 11 hitouts and three clearances for the game so far.
The Lions are now 6.4 from stoppages for the night.

Zorko on the ground as second half commences
Dayne Zorko starts on the ground so it looks like he's going to keep trying to fight through those cramps.
I'd suspect that if this game is in the bag at three-quarter time, he might sit out the final term.
Can the Hawks get back in this one? They need Mabior Chol and Nick Watson to fire up a bit.
I can't quite count them out just yet though, although it admittedly doesn't look good so far.
Josh Weddle is starting with the Logan Morris assignment after Morris torched Tom Barrass in the first half.

HT: Brisbane 8.8 (56) leads Hawthorn 4.4 (28)
A big turnover on the wing from Cam Rayner as the Lions looked to run down the clock and it results in a goal to Jarman Impey just eight seconds before the siren!
Could that be a game-turning goal? That's something the Hawks can take into the main break.
Brisbane still well in control here. It's been a brilliant first half from the reigning champs, who really put down a marker against one of their direct finals foes.
Logan Morris at the thick of it all for Brisbane. He's kicked 4.0 from 11 disposals and also has seven score involvements, and no one from Hawthorn's defence has been able to go with him.
Will Ashcroft has been an absolute Rolls Royce out there. He leads all players with 19 disposals and has four clearances and five score involvements.
Dayne Zorko speaks to Fox Footy at half-time and says he's dealing with cramps rather than a hamstring issue.
Josh Ward the high man for the Hawks with 17 touches and five clearances, while Jai Newcombe has 15 touches and six clearances.
The Wizard, Nick Watson, curiously quiet so far. He's been held to just four touches with Noah Answerth completely blanketing him so far.

Cameron goals as Lions cut up Hawks in transition
My goodness, the Lions are absolutely SHREDDING the Hawks on transition tonight!
The ball bounces out of the D50 far too easily again as Jarrod Berry finds Zac Bailey in the middle of the ground.
Bailey plays on and hands off to Charlie Cameron, who goals on the run and cues Country Road.
The Lions have kicked 6.3 from their defensive half so far tonight.

Lohmann hits the scoreboard after Impey's drop
Kai Lohmann hits the Eric Cantona celebration as he rams home Brisbane's seventh goal of the night!
Jarman Impey goes for a big contested mark right on the 50m arc and he ends up spoiling his own teammates, and the ball flies over the back as Lohmann runs into an open goal.
Hawks look well off it tonight, sort of like the Lions looked last weekend.

D'Ambrosio gets a goal out of nothing for the Hawks
Brilliant finish from Massimo D'Ambrosio in heavy, heavy traffic!
It's messy stuff again inside Hawthorn's forward line as it's been all night, but D'Ambrosio picks up the loose ball and breaks a tackle and rams it home on the run.
Meanwhile, Dayne Zorko is back on the ground to test out his troublesome hamstring.
Fri 7 Aug 2026 at 8:32pm
Morris adds his FOURTH goal of the first half
Logan Morris is laying waste to Hawthorn's backline right now.
His constant movement is giving the Hawks defenders fits, this time it's James Sicily who gets done as Morris takes another contested mark.
He's on a tough angle from 45m out, but gets the ball to drift inside the left-hand upright perfectly.
Fri 7 Aug 2026 at 8:31pm
Zorko's got a hamstring issue
This isn't good news for the Lions.
Dayne Zorko has been off the ground for the last couple of minutes and is getting his left hamstring worked on.
I can't imagine the Lions take a risk on the veteran defender.
Fri 7 Aug 2026 at 8:28pm
Gunston goals after receiving dubious free kick
Jack Gunston with a much-needed steadier among even more vociferous boos!
He gets under an awkward high ball and Darcy Gardiner is pinged for infringing in the marking contest, which is a tough call on the defender.
Gunston is tucked into the pocket on the wrong side for a right-footer, so casually unfurls the left-footed snap and converts.
Fri 7 Aug 2026 at 8:26pm
Kai Lohmann is playing like a madman out there
Kai Lohmann is in the thick of EVERYTHING right now for the Lions.
He's got 10 disposals and a tackle, which probably should've been rewarded with a holding the ball call on Jarman Impey.
The Hawks just look a tad slow at ground level right now.
Fri 7 Aug 2026 at 8:23pm
Morris kicks his third from close range
Logan Morris is running riot down in Brisbane's forward line!
Dan Annable has a running shot on the goal that is a horrible miscue, and it looks like the ball is going to sail through for a behind, but Morris gets on the end of it.
He drops the mark but he's run Tom Barrass that ragged, that he's got enough time to pick up the footy and he kicks his third from close range.
Brisbane by four goals. Hawthorn needs the next one.

Hipwood goals as Lions finally win a centre bounce
Brisbane finally wins a centre clearance after an 0-5 start to the match and it immediately yields a goal.
This time it's Eric Hipwood who takes the mark inside 50, and he goes back and drills the set shot from 40m out directly in front.
It feels like Hawthorn's got its defensive match-ups all wrong here.
Fri 7 Aug 2026 at 8:19pm
Cameron gets the first goal of the second term
A couple of excellent repeat efforts from Kai Lohmann in the middle of the ground allows the Lions to come away with a genuine 50-50 ball.
More trouble for the Hawks with the Morris-Barrass match-up as well as Morris pushes up to the wing to get involved and then charges down the ground towards the forward line to help the Lions go inside 50.
The ball ends in the hands of Charlie Cameron, who takes a mark at the top of the square and snaps truly from the set shot.

QT: Brisbane 2.3 (15) leads Hawthorn 1.3 (9)
A fascinating first quarter in the books at the Gabba as the Lions take a six-point lead into the break.
Both sides with a couple of missed opportunities so I reckon a goal margin is just about fair.
Hawthorn is edging the inside 50 count 14-13, while they've also got a healthy lead in the clearance count (13-7), including a 4-0 lead out of centre bounces.
Hawthorn's Josh Ward is the leading ball-winner on the ground with 10 disposals and also has three clearances, while Will Ashcroft is Brisbane's high man with eight touches.
A couple of headaches for Hawks coach Sam Mitchell at either end of the ground posed by Harris Andrews and Logan Morris.
Andrews has absolutely taken Mitch Lewis's lunch money so far, while Morris looks far too mobile for Tom Barrass.
It wouldn't surprise me to see a few magnets switched around at quarter-time.

Brisbane with a couple of big missed chances
The Lions will feel they should be ahead by more here.
Zac Bailey with a missed set shot from directly in front of goal and then Logan Morris fails to make the distance on a running snap from around 30m out from directly in front as well.
