The New England Patriots are adding another player to their backfield just in time for preseason action against the Indianapolis Colts, the team announced.
New England is signing former Los Angeles Chargers running back Hassan Haskins, giving the Patriots another option at running back and on special teams as training camp continues. Haskins spent the past two seasons with the Chargers after beginning his NFL career with the Tennessee Titans. The former Michigan running back was selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
His offensive production isn't necessarily what makes him an intriguing camp addition. Haskins carried the ball only 17 times for 47 yards last season while adding four receptions for 13 yards. He did, however, find the end zone twice for Los Angeles during the 2024 season. Where Haskins can potentially earn his way onto New England's roster is special teams.
The 26-year-old has experience returning kicks and has consistently shown ability to contribute without the football in his hands. Haskins' ability to understand blocking assignments, protect the quarterback, and contribute across multiple special teams units has helped him stick around the NFL despite limited offensive production.
Haskins should receive opportunities throughout the remainder of training camp and potentially during preseason action to prove he deserves a roster spot.
Contract details have not yet been reported. August roster spots are often won by players who can contribute in multiple areas. If Haskins can run the ball when called upon, handle his assignments offensively and become a reliable special teams contributor, he'll give the Patriots a reason to keep him around when final cuts arrive.
