European champions Paris Saint-Germain have retained the UEFA Super Cup following a 2-1 victory over Premier League side Aston Villa on Wednesday night. From a Nigerian perspective, the headline team news before kick-off at the Stadion Salzburg in Austria was the inclusion of English-born Nigerian goalkeeper Owen Asemota in Unai Emery's matchday squad. Asemota moved up the goalkeeping pecking order due to the unavailability of first-choice goalkeeper Emi Martínez, who was granted an extended break following Argentina's run to the final of the 2026 World Cup. The 18-year-old dual-national goalkeeper was Aston Villa's third-choice goalkeeper against the Parisians, with Marco Bizot starting between the posts and James Wright providing cover on the bench. Had he made his senior debut for Aston Villa on the night, Asemota would have worn the number 60 shirt. Asemota travelled with Aston Villa's first team to Asia as part of their preparations for the new season and was an unused substitute against Bayern Munich, BG Pathum United and the Indonesia All-Stars. Although Aston Villa gave Paris Saint-Germain a run for their money, the French giants retained the Super Cup thanks to Désiré Doué's second half strike, after Brian Madjo had cancelled out Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's opener.
