Everton lit up Murrayfield with a morale-boosting 3-1 win over Premier League rivals Newcastle United before the eclipse plunged the home of Scottish rugby union into darkness.
Thierno Barry kept up his impressive pre-season with a superbly taken goal on 27 minutes after a sprint from the halfway line.
Iliman Ndiaye doubled the Blues’ advantage from the penalty spot on 36 minutes before Tyrique George added a spectacular third with a turn and shot on 73 minutes.
The Magpies reduced arrears five minutes before the end through Harvey Barnes, but the damage was done.
And here's how we rated the Everton players...
Mark Travers 8
Two important saves when the game was goalless and then another one early in the second half to keep out Jacob Murphy, he has generally looked a competent understudy ahead of Jordan Pickford’s return.
Nathan Patterson 7
With still no new right-back signed, he enjoyed a rare outing on home soil and put in a great cross that Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall nearly converted.
Vitalii Mykolenko 6
After being caught out of position for Stuttgart’s opener on Saturday, he still looks a bit rusty and his mistake nearly led to a goal for Anthony Elanga, although he regained his composure after the break to put in a well-timed slide challenge on Murphy.
Michael Keane 7
His headed clearance was volleyed over from Yoane Wissa early on as Newcastle threatened and he produced another solid display alongside James Tarkowski.
James Tarkowski 7
Big tackle on William Osula in the lead up to Everton’s opener, the captain led by example with a typically strong performance.
Hayden Hackney 7
Was bailed out by Tarkowski but has always looked to get on the ball and seemed somewhat unfortunate with a couple of rejected penalty shouts after the break.
Harrison Armstrong 9
Two big assists from the teenager, when Ndiaye went down in the build-up to the opening goal, he displayed the speed of thought and foot to pick out Barry and then calmly laid the ball off to George for Everton’s third goal.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall 7
Denied by Lukas Hornicek but after that, Everton took control and he won the penalty after being brought down by Joelinton.
Iliman Ndiaye 8
Will feel he should have scored before he did exactly that moments later when coolly converting from the penalty spot to find the net for the first time since his return.
Tyrique George 9
A threat throughout, he capped a hugely encouraging performance with a clever turn and shot from Armstrong’s pass for what is hopefully the first of many goals for Everton.
Thierno Barry 9
Excellent centre-forward display, took his goal superbly, cleverly winning the ball on the halfway line, driving forwards and getting back on his feet after being knocked over by Lewis Hall, he was a constant threat.
SUBS
Merlin Rohl (on 52 for Patterson) 7
Solid display off the bench at right-back.
Charly Alcaraz (on 64 for Dewsbury-Hall) 6
Picked up a booking for a foul just moments after coming on.
Tyler Dibling (on 64 for Ndiaye) 6
Has got his work cut out with Ndiaye back and Brennan Johnson having been signed, he kept things ticking over on the right.
Beto (on 64 for Barry) 6
Finished last season as first choice striker but currently looks behind Barry in the pecking order.
Adam Aznou (on 74 for Mykolenko) 5
A few more minutes at left-back but the cross from Murphy for Harvey Barnes’ consolation goal came down his flank.
Jake O’Brien (on 82 for Keane) n/a
Late cameo in his favoured centre-back role.
Harvey Foster (on 82 for Hackney) n/a
More first team exposure for the youngster.
