So far, Harry Wilson has been the only attacker Leeds United have signed this summer. This does not look like it will be the case come the end of the window, however, with reports suggesting we are on the lookout for another striker and attacker. Igor Paixao is a name that Leeds continue to be linked with. The Brazilian winger would undoubtedly add that extra bit of quality we need in the final third. However, another attacking player Leeds were previosuly linked with has recently completed an underwhelming move elsewhere. So by all accounts, the 49ers look as if they may have dodged a bullet. Romano Schmid completes underwhelming Serie A move Romano Schmid was wanted by Leeds in January, but the Whites ultimately ended up signing Facundo Buonanaotte instead. The 26-year-old is primarily an attacking midfielder who also has the ability to play across the front line if needed. In 34 Bundesliga appearances last season, Schmid scored four goals and provided eight assists. The playmaker came close to joining Leeds in January. But now it appears that the prospect of the Austrian international ending up at Elland Road is now unlikely. According to Florian Plettenberg’s report, Schmid has completed a move from Werder Bremen to Frosinone. Werder Bremen are said to receive around £7.25million initially, with add-ons taking the deal up to around £8.5million. So after missing out on a Premier League move just a matter of months ago, Schmid is now joining a newly promoted Serie A team. The 49ers may have dodged a bullet with Romano Schmid The Austrian likely would have had a bigger impact than Buonanotte should he have joined us in January. But I guess it would’ve been hard for him not to be better than Buonanotte. This does not mean that Schmid would’ve been an ideal long-term solution for us. With Wilson now occupying that space on the right flank, Schmid would almost have to rely on Daniel Farke lining up in a 4-2-3-1 to get game time in the number ten role. Given the modest fee Schmid was sold for and the calibre of club he has joined, with all due respect, it looks like the 49ers did the right thing when it comes to not signing Schmid. Surely if he were a world beater, someone better would’ve signed him. Whilst he would’ve been useful in the short-term for the second half of last season, there’s no way an attacker, signed by a newly promoted Serie A team for under £10million is the right player to elevate us in the long term. We all know that attackers typically cost a premium. Especially ones we need to elevate our squad. The 49ers need to be shopping for players like Paixao in the region of £30million and up to avoid there being a big drop-off in quality behind the likes of Wilson and Noah Okafor.
