The Magpies started well enough in the first half with chances for Yoane Wissa, William Osula and Anthony Elanga but could not convert and allowed Everton an open path back into the game. Failure to finish where and when it mattered was enough encouragement for Everton to establish a 2-0 lead at the break as Thierno Barry, who scored the winner at St James' Park in the Premier League last season, cashed in on sloppiness from Sven Botman before a costly Joelinton challenge handed Everton a penalty, which Iliman Ndiaye rolled home to beat Lukas Hornicek. Everton went further ahead after Tyrique George's stunner with 17 minutes to go before Harvey Barnes pulled one back after a Jacob Murphy assist. Auditions are running out as the club cllose in on a new right-back. Malick Thiaw 6 Some risky moments as his pre-season form took something of a dip here at Murrayfield. Just one defensive contribution of note. Sven Botman 5 Lost the ball on halfway to Barry. His pre-season struggles continue. Lewis Hall 6 Trying to get back up to speed after missing Valencia. A handy 45 minutes all the same. Aladji Bamba 7 One of the positives of the first half. Made 22 passes in the opposition half. Joelinton 6 Cost his side dear with a lunge for the penalty incident. Anthony Elanga 7 Back on his feet and caused a few issues. Bazoumana Toure 8 Some good attacking play down the left with some dangerous crosses. Looks a real talent so far in pre-season. Yoane Wissa 7 A threat but has wasted chances. A dip after two goal show in Valencia. William Osula 6 Had his moments just not enough of them, and will always be judged on goals. Team in second half Lukas Hornicek 8 Walked away with man of the match after preventing the scoreline getting ugly after facing over a dozen shots. Mason Miley 8 A really positive change as he passed with purpose and created chance for Jacob Murphy. Must be neck and neck with Shahar if not ahead of him. Henry Johnson 7 This was another composed and mature performance from the youngster despite Everton's strong second half showing. Miodrag Pivas 6 Thrown in at the deep end and didn't do too badly. Dylan Charlton 7 Made a couple of interceptions and recoveries in a decent showing. Sean Steur 7 Turned by George for the goal but otherwise did OK. A hand in the goal. Jacob Ramsey 6 Did OK but perhaps knows he will be unchallenged for starting spot against Liverpool. Joe Willock 6 Opened Everton up with a pass for Barnes' goal. Jacob Murphy 8 Brought some threat to the table at least. One chance early after coming on and an assist to tee up Barnes for the consolation. Harvey Barnes 7 Another goal to his tally. At least helped make the scoreline respectable.
