49ers will be baffled as Leeds United flop on brink of joining Italian giants: View

A couple of times during their reign as owners of Leeds United, the 49ers have delved into the loan market. Manor Solomon and Joe Rodon are examples of this strategy working perfectly. After a fruitful loan spell, Rodon went on to sign for us permanently and become one of our most important players. But it has not always worked out, with Facundo Buonanotte’s loan move to West Yorkshire being a disaster. However, there is another player who the 49ers signed for Leeds on loan, who is on the brink of making a mega-money move elsewhere, just a couple of years after a disastrous spell at Elland Road. Djed Spence on brink of signing for Inter Milan Leeds fans were right to be excited when Djed Spence joined on loan from Tottenham in 2023. The full-back had bags of ability and was able to play on either flank, but at Leeds, he was extremely disappointing. The Englishman made just seven league appearances, and in January of 2024, we terminated his loan deal due to concerns regarding his attitude. The defender then went on to join Genoa on loan in Italy. This made it all the more surprising to see Spence’s career revival at Spurs over the last two seasons. Granted, Spurs have been absolutely diabolical, which opened the door for Spence to finally get in the team, but in fairness to him, he’s made the most of his chance and has even gone on to establish himself as an England international. Now, according to Fabrizio Romano, Spence is on the brink of joining the reigning champions of Italy, Inter Milan. Spence has agreed personal terms with the Italian giants, and the Englishman looks set to return to Serie A permanently for around £26.9million. Djed Spence’s recent form will baffle the 49ers If you’d have told the 49ers when they terminated Spence’s loan that he’d end up starring for England in the World Cup and earning a move to Inter Milan, they’d have laughed you out of the room. I guess that’s what makes Spence’s recent success all the more frustrating. I get it, he was only with us on loan, but it was evident how little he cared about us during his time at Leeds. His recovery tackle against Argentina in the World Cup was the tackle of the tournament. But many other Leeds fans and I were shocked to see that Spence could move that quickly. The 26-year-old never seemed to enter a full sprint during his time at Leeds. For Spence, his ability was never in question, but for one reason or another, it just didn’t work out for him at United. He will never be popular at Elland Road, and the fact he has gone on to such heights after leaving Leeds under controversial circumstances will not do him any favours.
