Since then, Pedro Porro signed a new long-term contract to remain undisputed at right-back, while Destiny Udogie and the newly-arrived Andy Robertson both sit ahead of Spence on the left, leaving him with genuinely nowhere obvious to play regardless of how well he had just performed for his country. Once that reality set in, Spence himself pushed for the move in recent days, according to Romano, suggesting this became a mutual decision rather than one forced entirely by the club. There is still a reasonable question over whether Tottenham got full value here. Selling a homegrown, England international right-back for £27m only weeks after his career-best tournament is the kind of business that looks defensible today and slightly regrettable in two years if Spence goes on to establish himself at a club of Inter’s stature or beyond.
