Leeds United have become the first Premier League club to make a formal move for Orlando Gill. A new report from South America states an offer has now landed on San Lorenzo’s desk for the Paraguay goalkeeper. Gill has been linked with several English clubs since his impressive World Cup. These include Manchester United, Ipswich Town and, for a while, Aston Villa. Manchester United claims have been particularly insistent, which is odd given they don’t need a goalkeeper. So far, none of those clubs had gone beyond interest and enquiries. That appears to have changed. The decision is now with San Lorenzo, who must decide whether to cash in on one of the club’s biggest assets. Also, Ipswich Town have featured prominently in reports throughout the summer. Leeds, however, are now reported to have gone one step further than everyone else. So we don’t know whether the Premier League club have triggered Gill’s €6.9m (£5.9m) release clause or are attempting to negotiate directly with San Lorenzo. Competition, not a clear path The move also raises an interesting question about Gill’s role if he ends up at Elland Road. As we have been following closely, Leeds are expected to sell Lucas Perri before the window closes. Therefore, this will open up space for another goalkeeper in the squad. At the same time, though, they have just spent heavily to bring in James Trafford, who looks set to arrive as the club’s new No.1 after becoming one of the biggest signings of the summer. That suggests Gill would be arriving to compete for the shirt, rather than walk straight into the starting XI. Furthermore, whether that is the sort of move the Paraguay international is looking for is another matter.
