Home Affairs and Internal Security Permanent Secretary DICKSON MATEMBO has warned that anyone recruited or coerced into acts of political violence will face the law, regardless of political affiliation. Mr. MATEMBO said the Ministry is concerned by reports and videos of violence circulating on various media platforms. He said the Ministry has received information suggesting that some individuals are staging attacks and attempting to blame rival political parties in an effort to incite unrest and create a false narrative around the election campaigns. Mr. MATEMBO was speaking during a joint media briefing with Information and Media Permanent Secretary THABO KAWANA in Lusaka today. Meanwhile, Mr. KAWANA said Government has uncovered what it describes as plans to orchestrate political violence aimed at portraying Zambia and President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA negatively ahead of the August 13 General Election. He said some of the violent incidents recorded during campaigns appear to have been planned to provoke police action and falsely implicate the ruling party in acts of violence to influence public opinion. Mr. KAWANA also accused some media outlets of amplifying what he described as propaganda to advance opposition political interests while undermining the President and Government during the campaign period.
