The 2026 UEFA Super Cup will take place on Wednesday, August 12, at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria, with kick-off scheduled for 9pm CAT. The season-opening European showpiece will pit UEFA Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) against UEFA Europa League winners Aston Villa in a fixture that has taken on a unique identity as a “Visit Rwanda Derby”, with both clubs serving as partners of Rwanda’s tourism promotion campaign. It marks the first time that two elite European clubs partnered with Visit Rwanda will meet in a UEFA final. The development comes just months after PSG faced Premier League champions Arsenal—whose Visit Rwanda partnership expired in June—in the UEFA Champions League final. ALSO READ: PSG beat Arsenal on penalties to retain Champions League title The ‘Visit Rwanda Derby’ PSG and Aston Villa enter the Super Cup as champions of Europe’s two premier club competitions. PSG booked their place after retaining the UEFA Champions League title by defeating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties in the final, following a 1-1 draw after extra time. Aston Villa, meanwhile, secured their place by winning the UEFA Europa League and ending a long wait for major continental silverware. They defeated German Bundesliga side Freiburg 3-0 in the final in Istanbul, Turkey. What makes the fixture particularly significant for Rwanda is that both clubs are ambassadors of the Visit Rwanda brand. PSG have maintained a partnership with Visit Rwanda for several years, helping promote the country as a destination for tourism, investment and business opportunities through one of the world’s most recognisable football clubs. The Premier League club described the agreement as the most significant sponsorship deal in its history, with the Visit Rwanda logo appearing on the front of the men’s, women’s and academy team shirts. Omar Artan to make UEFA Super Cup history Somali referee Omar Artan is set to make history by becoming the first non-European official to referee the UEFA Super Cup. The 34-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable rise over the past 18 months. He became the first Somali referee to officiate a CAF Champions League final, before receiving the CAF Men’s Referee of the Year Award in 2025 and earning selection for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His appointment to Wednesday’s final represents another landmark moment in his career and for African refereeing. However, not everything has gone according to plan. Artan was unable to enter the United States for the 2026 World Cup, preventing him from fulfilling that particular ambition for now. What happened the last time PSG played Aston Villa? Aston Villa defeated PSG 3-2 in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie at Villa Park last season. However, the result was not enough to overturn PSG’s 3-1 victory in the first leg at the Parc des Princes. The French champions progressed to the semi-finals with a 5-4 aggregate victory. Those two matches remain the only competitive meetings between the clubs. Team news Aston Villa Aston Villa will be without key trio Ezri Konsa, Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Martínez for the UEFA Super Cup, with manager Unai Emery giving them additional time off following their involvement in the World Cup. All three players have been linked with moves away from Villa this summer. Konsa has reportedly attracted interest from Arsenal and Liverpool, while Martínez has been linked with Juventus. Watkins has also been tipped for a possible move to Turkey. Emery has explained that the trio were given four weeks of holiday instead of the usual three because of their involvement in the World Cup. Probable XI: Bizot; Cash, Lindelöf, Pau Torres, Maatsen; João Gomes, Kamara; McGinn, Buendía, Garnacho; Abraham. PSG PSG could also be without several key players, with Bradley Barcola, Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué, Fabián Ruiz, Achraf Hakimi, Lucas Hernández and Warren Zaïre-Emery all doubts because of fitness concerns. Probable XI: Safonov; Zabarnyi, Marquinhos, Willian Pacho, Nuno Mendes; João Neves, Vitinha, Dro Fernández; Mbaye, Mayulu, Kvaratskhelia. A win for Rwanda regardless of the result When PSG and Aston Villa take to the pitch in Salzburg, only one club will lift the UEFA Super Cup. For Rwanda, however, the occasion represents a victory in visibility regardless of the final result. With two Visit Rwanda partners competing for European silverware, the fixture highlights the growing role of sport as a platform for national branding, tourism promotion and international engagement.
