When the Boston Red Sox traded for Adley Rutschman, who was obviously the biggest player moved in that deal, they also got Jake Rogers. Rogers, who typically caught Tarik Skubal over the past few seasons except for the past few months, was designated for assignment by the Detroit Tigers just a few days before that. He ended up landing with the Orioles before being included in this trade. According to the latest report, with Rutschman back, Rogers has been designated for assignment, a decision that doesn’t come as much of a surprise. “Jake Rogers was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Tuesday, just eight days after he was a part of the trade deadline deal that sent fellow catcher Adley Rutschman to Boston. “The Red Sox acquired Rutschman, Rogers and cash considerations from the Orioles on Aug. 3 in exchange for a hefty prospect haul in pitchers Anthony Eyanson and Kyson Witherspoon, outfielder Enddy Azocar and catcher Carlos Narváez,” Erich Richter of the Post reported. The problem for somebody like Rogers was that Rutschman obviously has a spot, and Connor Wong has already worked with a lot of the staff. Not that Rogers isn't an above-average defensive catcher and hasn't caught some of the better pitchers in baseball, but teams often like to keep guys around who have familiarity with their pitching staff, especially when adding a brand-new starting catcher in Rutschman. Rogers wouldn't have been a bad backup option, but Wong is probably the safer option for a team trying to win the World Series and the division at the moment.
