A transfer battle is now brewing for Bologna’s Jhon Lucumi, with both Manchester United and Chelsea keen on the player.
The centre-back’s current deal at the Italian side runs out in 2027. Even though Bologna managed to fend off Sunderland’s approach last summer, they have failed to tie him down to a long-term deal.
This makes him a major candidate to leave, with Sport Witness having covered Nottingham Forest’s interest in him. Oliver Glasner’s side have made an initial offer already, with Juventus also in the race.
Now, the chase for the Colombian is intensifying, with Manchester United competing with Chelsea for his signature.
Threat lingering for Juventus
Quotidiano Sportivo report that so far, there have been three offers for Lucumi.
Juventus put forward €15m plus €3m in bonuses, which was rejected. The Old Lady then offered €18m, which was also rejected and then Como also stepped forward with a bigger offer. This would have been acceptable for Bologna but the player was waiting for a new approach from Juve.
While that has not arrived, Nottingham Forest have also offered €20m plus €5m in bonuses. The destination doesn’t appeal to the player, with Juve still watching the situation unfold.
Now, Manchester United have ‘made a move’ for his signature. Lucumi would be interested in the transfer, as he is only keen on joining what has been described as ‘big clubs’ by the outlet.
The Red Devils’ task is being made difficult by Chelsea, who have lost Trevoh Chalobah to Como. Benoit Badiashile can also join Napoli. As a result, the Blues have made contact for Lucumi, with Bologna demanding €25m plus bonuses of €3m.
The outlet clarify that Lucumi won’t wait for Juve for too long. If he gets a good opportunity in England, he wouldn’t reject it. Chelsea and Manchester United seem to fit the bill.
Our take: Lucumi deserves Champions League football
The 28-year-old has starred for Bologna. Not just in Serie A, but in the Champions League and Europa League. He has won silverware and is one of the most reliable defenders in the Italian top-flight. Jhon Lucumi should be playing Champions League football and seeking to play regularly for his next club.
Chelsea aren’t playing in the Champions League but Manchester United are. The Blues need a defensive addition more desperately.
Injury issues around Matthijs De Ligt and Lisandro Martinez may leave Michael Carrick’s side short and Lucumi could come in as an important signing.
