Portuguese giants FC Porto have made Tottenham Hotspur left-back Souza their primary defensive target this summer, according to Foot Mercato. The Dragoes have closely tracked the young defender since his academy days at Santos, monitoring his progress well before his €15 million move to North London earlier this year. With Porto seeking a long-term solution at left-back, club executives are eyeing a move for Souza before the window closes next month. The 20-year-old made the move to Europe in January 2026 after a breakout spell with Santos. However, regular starts at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium have been hard to come by due to fierce competition. Souza managed just two starts in the second half of last season and saw limited action during his first six months in England, often finding himself behind the likes of Destiny Udogie and Djed Spence in the pecking order. Recognising Souza’s desire for regular football, Porto have moved quickly to gain an edge over domestic rivals Benfica, who also admire the Brazilian. Porto’s recruitment staff see his recovery speed and high-intensity overlapping runs as an ideal fit for the aggressive full-back role required in the Primeira Liga, which they seek to defend after cruising to the title last season. While Porto are yet to open talks with Tottenham, their chances appear slim. Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi rates Souza highly and is keen to develop him within the squad for the upcoming campaign. Nonetheless, the prospect of a quick profit on a player signed only this year could prove tempting for Spurs. With Souza remaining Porto’s top left-back target, the club are expected to step up their pursuit of the Spurs man or move swiftly for alternative options if a move proves impossible.
