At the beginning of August, less than 20 days before the league debut against Torino, Milan have 33 players in their squad and will have to reduce the number to 25 for the squad lists. Selling is never easy, as other Italian clubs are finding, but some revenue is needed. Ruben Amorim has decided to take the time necessary to evaluate everyone, starting with the young players. Then there’s a new management team, much more accustomed to scouting talent than finding buyers. Eventually though something must shake loose. The need to recoup Milan never planned for a summer of €200m in spending and, in the space of a month, they have already spent more than half of that on Ramos (€70m), Gila (€30m) and Sankhoun Diawara (€3m). In short, it could be a summer of surprises. After Juventus and Como, the Rossoneri are the team that have invested the most in Serie A. If we consider only new signings, excluding buy-outs, they are first. This time a year ago, Milan were negotiating the sale of Malick Thiaw to Newcastle and had already sold Tijjani Reijnders to Manchester City and Theo Hernandez to Al-Hilal for well over €100m combined. By mid-August 2025, the Rossoneri had already sold 15 players (including options to buy) for €157m. Two years ago, CharlesDe Ketelaere had brought in around €20m having permanently joined Atalanta, while the previous summer (2023) it was Sandro Tonali who went to Newcastle for nearly €60m. In short, there had always been some movement on the outgoings more than a month after the transfer window opened. This year, however, the outgoing transfers list remains empty, for a few reasons. One of these involves Amorim. The Portuguese coach is carefully examining the most promising youngsters and testing players who until a few weeks ago seemed out of the running at Milanello, such as Samu Chukwueze and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The same goes for Pervis Estupinan. Negotiations with Aston Villa, at least for now, have reportedly been put on hold by Amorim, who is looking for a quick winger who is good in one-on-one situations. These are qualities that Davide Bartesaghi, however, lacks. Milan are still a work in progress. Everyone is starting at roughly the same level and has the chance to secure a permanent position. Even those who saw little action last season, such as David Odogu, Samuele Ricci and Zachary Athekame. The upcoming tests against Chelsea, and Manchester United – after the one against Inter – will offer more reliable indications. Meanwhile, Amorim also finds himself with a delicate case like Rafael Leao, who now might stay as the right offers are not coming in. Moves are needed, and time is running out.
