Newcastle United are refusing to give up on the idea of a deal for defender Giorgio Scalvini but are biding their time before making an offer. Corriere della Sera, in their Bergamo edition, cover the Atalanta defender and Newcastle’s continued inquiries about his availability. Newcastle Won’t Let Go According to the newspaper, the 22-year-old is one player that Atalanta have ‘no intention of losing this summer’. But that is not stopping Newcastle from asking questions. They have once again made inquiries about the centre-back, despite Atalanta making it clear that he’s a key part of Maurizio Sarri’s plans. The Magpies’ efforts are ‘merely exploratory’ for the time being. No official offers or formal approaches have been made to the Nerazzurri’s management. That does not mean they are not in the mix and making it clear that they would like to sign the defender. Sport Witness have covered Newcastle’s revived interest since the end of last month. A report at the end of July explained that they had been in contact regarding a potential transfer. Tottenham Hotspur were also believe to be in the mix for the centre-back. Long-Term Interest The Magpies interest goes far beyond that. Sport Witness covered numerous reports in last year’s summer transfer window stating that they were big fans of the Italian defender. Indeed, even at that point he was considered a long-term target. They, of course, have money to burn following Sandro Tonali’s move to Tottenham Hotspur. Bruno Guimarães impending move to Arsenal will also bolster their coffers considerably. The question is whether they want to spend big on a centre-back when they already have Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman, Fabian Schär and Dan Burn as options. For now, they’re just asking the question about Giorgio Scalvini while Atalanta seem determined to make it clear that they’re not interested.
