Glasgow and Boston's relationship reaches next level as twinned cities get official tartan
A new bespoke tartan has been unveiled to celebrate the twinning of Glasgow and Boston.
A new tartan designed to commemorate Glasgow's twinning with Boston following the 2026 World Cup has been unveiled. The Tartan Army won the hearts of locals in the Massachusetts city after an unforgettable summer off the pitch.
Officially registered by Buchanan Galleries, the design has been named Twinned in Tartan and was commissioned to celebrate the positive impact Scotland fans left on Boston.
Designed by Glasgow-based tartan specialists, Slanj, the bespoke design includes colours inspired by the flags of Glasgow and Boston as well as the iconic Green Monster of Fenway Park in recognition of Boston's sporting heritage.
The new tartan has been described as "a striking new tartan that symbolises the friendship between the two cities and creates a lasting legacy ahead of the new partnership".
Buchanan Galleries has also commissioned a ceremonial kilt in the new tartan which will be gifted to the City of Boston for the official twinning ceremony.
The presentation will formally celebrate the long and storied history between Glasgow and Boston as two major North Atlantic port cities over the last four hundred years, while recognising the role Scotland supporters played in bringing the two cities even closer together during the recent FIFA World Cup.
Kathy Murdoch, Centre Director of Buchanan Galleries, said, “We’re incredibly proud to mark this special moment in Glasgow’s history with a tartan that reflects the warmth, friendship, and pride the Tartan Army brought to Boston during the World Cup.
“The incredible reception Scotland fans received showed just how powerful shared culture and community can be. 'Twinned in Tartan' is our way of celebrating that connection, while creating a lasting symbol of friendship between Glasgow and Boston.
"We hope the design will be welcomed by communities on both sides of the Atlantic and serve as a symbol of friendship, culture, and shared heritage for years to come.”
Brian Halley from Slanj Kilts added: "It was fantastic to see the incredible connection that developed between Scottish and Boston fans during the World Cup. Although we couldn't be there in person, watching the Tartan Army embrace the city and seeing the warm welcome they received from the people of Boston was truly inspiring.
"We are delighted to have played a part in bringing this special project to life and creating a tartan that represents the friendship, culture and shared spirit between Glasgow and Boston. The design behind 'Twinned in Tartan' captures the energy and character of both cities, and we are sure it will become a much-loved symbol of this exciting new partnership for years to come."
Bailie Christy Mearns, Depute Lord Provost of Glasgow, said: “The friendship that grew between Glasgow and Boston during the World Cup was something very special, and it is wonderful to see Glasgow businesses embracing that connection and the opportunities created by our growing relationship. The ‘Twinned in Tartan’ design is a creative and distinctly Scottish way to celebrate it.
“Bringing together the character of both cities, the tartan is a fitting reminder of the warmth and friendship shown to Scotland supporters in Boston. As we look to strengthen the already close ties between Glasgow and Boston, I hope it will become another symbol of the friendship and shared spirit that connects our two cities.”
