Rangers see bid rejected for Sheffield United ace as 'significant' injury to star sparks replacement operation
The Light Blues are in the hunt for another striker amid the injury crisis
Rangers have reportedly seen their loan bid for Sheffield United striker Ryan Oné rejected, only hours after it was announced that current marksman Youssef Chermiti will be sidelined for a ‘significant’ period of time.
The Portuguese youth international was stretchered off in the first half during Rangers’ 2-1 defeat to Hibs at Ibrox on Sunday. The club have since confirmed that he’s sustained anterior cruciate ligament damage. Turkish side Galatasaray had tabled a £22m bid for the 22-year old prior to the match, however this didn’t meet Rangers’ evaluation of the player.
In turn, the Light Blues have renewed interest in Oné as a potential short-term replacement for Chermiti. The 20-year old had been on their radar earlier in the window after a successful loan spell at EFL League One champions Lincoln City last season. Rangers boss Derek McInnes is now in need of another striker to fill the Chermiti-shaped hole.
Rangers loan bid rejected for One
According to transfer journalist Ben Jacobs, the Light Blues saw their initial bid ‘rejected’ by the Blades for the Scotland Under-21 international. He said via X: “Understand Rangers had a loan with buy option rejected today for Sheffield United’s Ryan Oné. Talks ongoing.”
Born and bred in Coatbridge, Oné came through the youth ranks at Hamilton Academical before his move to Bramall Lane in 2023. Recent minutes struggles saw him farmed out to Lincoln in January for the second half of last season. His five goals in 16 league appearances helped them earn promotion to the Championship. Since returning to the Blades, as well as Rangers, Oné has attracted transfer interest from former Light Blues boss Russell Martin at his new club Leicester City.

Chermiti out for a ‘significant period of time’
The timing of Chermiti’s injury couldn’t be worse for Rangers boss Derek McInnes, who is currently tasked with navigating his side through a tricky fixture-congested period. The Light Blues have captain Lawrence Shankland and Ryan Naderi as other options in this area but both have failed to hit the ground running. Meanwhile, fellow forward Bojan Miovski hasn’t registered a single minute.
The club confirmed the timeline of the Chermiti injury via their website. The update read: “Following assessment, striker Youssef Chermiti suffered an ACL injury in Sunday’s match with Hibernian. Youssef will be out of action for a significant period of time. Everyone at Rangers is with him as he begins his recovery.”
