Hassan caught Celtic’s eye after a successful World Cup with his native Egypt, helping them reach the Last 16 stage. The Hoops will host Austrian champions LASK Linz in the first leg of their Champions League decider on Wednesday, August 19. After falling short at the same stage last season to Kazakhstan minnows Kairat Almaty, it’s a fixture that the club can’t afford to take lightly. In turn, Celtic are hoping to register Hassan in time for the two-legged decider later this month. Celtic ‘hope’ Hassan is ready for Europe According to Sky Sports: “Real Oviedo winger Haissem Hassan has completed a medical in London ahead of his £9m move to Celtic. It’s understood the Egypt international is due to travel to Glasgow to finalise the paperwork on a four-year contract, with the Hoops having the option to extend by a further year. “The clubs have agreed an initial fee of around £6m, with £3m in add-ons. A significant chunk of the bonus payments will be paid out if Celtic reach the league phase of the Champions League later this month. Celtic hope to have Hassan registered in time to be part of the squad for the Champions League play-off against LASK Linz next week.” It’s been a fairly routine start for the champions so far this season, with two wins from two in the Premiership. They’ll face Dundee United at Tannadice in the League Cup before the first leg. Ahead of the return leg in Austria, the Hoops were scheduled to travel to St Johnstone, however the SFA have postponed all league matches for Scottish teams competing in Europe during this weekend. What can Celtic fans expect from Haissem Hassan? Hassan featured in both of Egypt’s knockout games in the World Cup against Australia and Argentina. Despite a defeat in the latter, the Hoops-bound winger stood out against the eventual finalists - attracting transfer interest from far and wide. His domestic season with Real Oveido was less prosperous, as he failed to score in 38 domestic appearances. His rapid, direct approach to wide play caused the Argentinian defence countless problems. In a Celtic side who play on the front foot 90% of the time, the Egyptian has the makings of someone who’d be well-suited to playing in a high-tempo environment. To add to this, with the club already spending a combined £17m on forwards Camilo Duran and Kasper Hogh, signing Hassan would give them an exciting new-look forward line for the season ahead.
