Italy's Tokyo Olympics sprint
champion Marcell Jacobs on Wednesday vowed to be back in action
soon after an injury spoiled the double defence of his European
100 metres title on Tuesday.
Jacobs pulled up hurt during the final of the 100 metres at the
European Athletics Championships in Birmingham and, while he got
over the finishing line, he only managed to come seventh.
"Sometimes bad luck has it in for us," Jacobs, who won the 100
metres at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and helped Italy win the
4x100m relay gold at the same games, said in an Instagram post.
"After dominating the semifinals, with a time that would have
been enough to win the final, I was ready to fight for the
European title once again.
"But unfortunately, I wasn't even able to run that final.
"An injury before the start stopped me, once again.
"It hurts. A lot. Especially when you know you're there, that
you're in good shape, and that you can fight to win.
"Now we'll do all the necessary tests to understand what
happened and how to proceed.
"One thing, however, remains the same: not giving up. Never. See
you soon".
