Ahead of what will be three games in 10 days for Hull KR, boss Willie Peters has revealed he has never seen a schedule like it. With the Robins’ round two fixture against Warrington needing to be postponed due to the World Club Challenge, that game will take place on Tuesday night, meaning that the side will play tomorrow [Thursday] and next Saturday, August 22. Peters, who joined the club in 2023, missed out on the infamous ‘Easter Weekend’ when all clubs would play two games over the one long weekend, with that coming to an end in 2022. In the midst of a huge play-off battle, with the side looking to claim a place in the top four and earn home advantage in the opening week, the congested period is the last thing both KR and Warrington would have wanted, however Peters is not going to use it as an excuse. “I’ve never seen this before,” Peters told the press earlier this week. “We’re going to embrace it. You need to. There’s only two options. One, you can complain, and I’ll certainly say that I think it’s too many games, and I’ll say that before it happens, but we’re embracing this period, and it’s an opportunity for us to put ourselves in a really strong position.” With such a packed schedule, keeping players healthy and not overworked will be key, not just for the next fortnight, but for the rest of the season when the fatigue starts to hit. Commenting on his potential plans, he said: “We spoke about the few different options that we’ve got. We know the option that we’re going to take. The players enjoy playing, that’s what they enjoy doing, and I suppose we’ve looked at it like a schoolboy carnival when you play six games in two days back then. “You feel a bit sore and sorry for yourself afterwards, but you enjoy it as a kid and that’s the approach that we’re going to take because it’s better than doing pre-season for them. That’s how we’re looking at it.” Airing his frustrations over the schedule again, Peters added: “There’s no doubt that it does need to be looked at but certainly, I’ve never heard of it before, the amount of games that we’re about to play in the short period of time.” Leeds Rhinos and Leigh set for classic and Carr-less Castleford to lose again – Click here to watch the latest episode of the Serious About Rugby League Predictions Show Hull KR’s plan of attack ahead of challenging fixture schedule “The main area of focus for us in the next couple of weeks is around recovery,” the Hull KR boss said. “We need to make sure that we recover the best way and provide the players with everything they need to recover well. “They need to take ownership as well, leading into games and especially for a game that is 33 degrees in terms of hydration and making sure that they eat well and all that sort of thing. “Your culture stands up through periods like this. Your professionalism stands up. I think it’s a good time for us to be able to show how far this club has come and how far this team has come by the way that we prepare and the way we recover and more importantly by what we do on the field.” In terms of training load, Peters revealed: “Add the Wigan game in, it’s four, I think, in 13 or 14 days or something like that, so it won’t be a great deal. It’s going to be mainly around recovery. It’s going to be mainly around freshening the guys up. “We’re putting things in place where we do have a lot of trust in the guys, making sure that they do things when they’re away from the club. We certainly don’t want to overload them by bringing them in and too much video and all that sort of stuff, but we still need to prepare them to play, and we still need to make sure that they’ve got the right amount of info to go into games. Asked about his plans in terms of roation, Peters said: “We’ll just look at it after each game. We’ll look at performance. We’re going to look at how people [pull through], whether there’s anything wrong with them, whether they need a rest or whether we feel that someone else needs an opportunity. “There’s no set plan now to say this is going to be ‘team 1’ this week, ‘team 2’, ‘team 3’, nothing like that at all. We’ve got an idea, obviously, we know what this week’s going to be and then we’ll have a think about it afterwards or look straight after the game at what we think we’ll go into the Warrington game with.”
