Thessaloniki is all set for another blockbuster edition in their fierce local derby as PAOK and Aris prepare to battle it out for bragging rights. The two Thessaloniki clubs will headline the Greek Super League’s fourth round on Monday morning (AEST) at “Toumba” stadium in search of a major triumph. Both teams are coming off the back of defeats last round, PAOK falling to Panathinaikos and Aris being dominated by AEK, and neither side will be keen to taste defeat again, particularly at the hands of a rival. Panathinaikos battles fellow unbeaten side Panetolikos at the Olympic Stadium in a game that will serve as an intriguing test for both. The Agrinio outfit enters the clash as the only team to record three straight league wins, putting them in the best possible position mentally to try and score an upset over the Greens. The “Trifylli” is not lacking in confidence either after winning their first two league games, the most recent one against PAOK, making for a most interesting match where we await to see who will blink first. AEK is looking to build on their impressive week with another victory, this time against Asteras Tripolis away. Enosi is hot off their first Champions League win in 20 years, which came right after their 5-0 demolition of Aris. The Arcadians will hope they can catch AEK in a fatigued state (physically and/or mentally) and cause an upset result. Olympiacos opens the round on Sunday morning against OFI at “Georgios Karaiskakis” ground, and the team will be gunning to deliver a winning start for new coach Imanol Alguacil. Alguacil takes over the reins from fellow Spaniard Jose Luis Mendilibar after his historic tenure with the “red-whites” ended this week, and the former Real Sociedad coach will be no doubt eager to get maximum points in his first game in charge. OFI will rate themselves a fair chance in the game after a strong start to the season in all competitions, with them more than prepared to give the Piraeus giants a fight. Iraklis is looking to build on last week’s maiden victory when they host Atromitos, one of the remaining teams that is still searching for its first league win this term. Kalamata faces Volos at home on Monday morning in one of two bouts between sides without a win this round, making the primary objective for each team very simple: get the win. The other such game will be played between Kifisia and Levadiakos, the former in slightly better circumstances as they have scored a point (an impressive draw with AEK), played one less game and are at home this matchday. Levadiakos will certainly feel the pressure to perform after recording three straight defeats. Their saving grace is that their games have come against PAOK, Panathinaikos and currently first-placed Panetolikos, making this their first opportunity against a team that is neither in form nor an established heavyweight of the league.
