The 2026 offseason has been promising for several teams. With franchises like the Philadelphia 76ers, the Los Angeles Lakers, and many others making significant improvements, most have something to look forward to next season. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the Brooklyn Nets. The Brooklyn Nets have arguably been among the league’s most underwhelming teams over the past few years. Although they were hailed as title contenders when they were led by the trio of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden, Brooklyn’s collapse has been swift. Although the Nets made some trades this offseason, acquiring players like Julius Randle, the franchise is struggling to establish itself. Thus, while fielding some fan questions, former NBA champion Channing Frye had every reason to be blunt while assessing the Nets’ potential next season. He stated: “How do you think the Brooklyn Nets will do this season? I’ve got two sentences for you. The first one is to stock up on chosenfamilywines.com. And No. 2 – garbage. Straight garbage.” Frye’s reaction to the Nets’ potential was ruthless. Still, the former NBA player didn’t let up, as he continued: “That’s alright. You’ll get another pick. You guys just don’t have an identity, you know? Like, what is a Brooklyn Net? You guys have Michael Porter Jr. and Julius Randle, but like, who’s your center? Who’s your starting guard? You’re missing a lot of pieces.” “You’ve got a guy or two, but you don’t have a team. And you’re going against the East, which is a beast this year,” Frye added. “So, good luck.” Frye essentially called out every major shortcoming in the Nets’ summer roster construction efforts. Although the team successfully added Julius Randle, the lack of reliable pieces to fill out the remainder of the roster raises questions about their potential to compete. But could the Nets still be competitive? The Prospects Aren’t Good For The Nets As Frye mentioned, the Brooklyn Nets are led by the core of Julius Randle and Michael Porter Jr. Individually, both players possess the star power and the scoring upside to position the Nets as an entertaining team to watch. Unfortunately, not only is this not enough, but it may not even be a solid foundation to build on. Last season, Randle posted 21.1 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game, positioning himself as a versatile forward with playmaking upside. Meanwhile, Porter Jr. averaged a career-high 24.2 points and 7.1 rebounds per game while shooting 46.3% from the field and 36.3% from three-point range. As standalone players, both were impactful. However, as a unit, the duo may not have the necessary tools to play off each other in a way that could benefit the Nets. Additionally, with trade rumors surrounding Porter Jr., Brooklyn could be planning more changes. Realistically, there isn’t much for Nets fans to look forward to. However, the development of young players could still be promising. After trading Nic Claxton to the Bulls, Day’Ron Sharpe is likely to take over as the starting center. While his averages of 8.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game may not inspire much confidence, the 24-year-old could be more impactful after earning a larger role. Other than Sharpe, the Nets could also be focused on developing players like Egor Demin, Drake Powell, and rookie guard Mikel Brown Jr. Although this could be exciting, too, hoping for victories may not be advisable. For all intents and purposes, the Nets are still stuck in rebuild mode. However, with the league’s latest anti-tanking policies coming into play, not having a competitive roster could hurt their chances of securing the top pick in next year’s draft.
