Selling all valuable assets has almost become commonplace at Leicester City for the last two summers. Plenty of players such as Jannik Vestergaard, Harry Winks and Abdul Fatawu have already moved on, and it’s unlikely that they will be the last. The Australian international missed all but two games last season as he continued to recover from a significant injury sustained whilst on loan at Sheffield United. In those couple of games, he quickly reminded City fans of the quality he has; heading one home to give City the lead against a promotion-hopeful Millwall side. Since then, he featured at his second World Cup; keeping two clean sheets for Australia before inevitably crashing out to Egypt. Manager Chris Wilder already confirmed talks were taking place, but now John Percy has reported that the Blades are moving closer to getting their man. Sheffield United’s second bid of £8m including add-ons was rejected by City, but the improved offer of £10m (+ add-ons) is said to be imminent. As for the player’s side, he has informed Leicester of his desire to depart, and ultimately return to Bramall Lane. A Good Deal? Whilst it’s certainly not a surprise, Souttar leaving isn’t necessarily ideal. With his departure, City will be left with just Wout Faes and Caleb Okoli as the two available centre-backs, both of whom have been linked with moves away. After Ben Nelson’s ACL injury, it seems like the Foxes have been left with an injury crisis in this position, which will only be exacerbated by another exit. Whilst Souttar may not be the perfect option under someone like Russell Martin, ahead of the Northampton game, the manager was full of praise for his defender. He said: “He captains his country, he’s done really well since he’s come back. I think he deserves to be; he’s a real leader.” These leadership qualities will certainly be missed, but if you look on the bright side, Martin can now find someone tailor-made for his system. Someone more comfortable with the ball at their feet, and more agile to play in a high line or defend big spaces. Considering City’s financial predicament, bringing this kind of money in will always be helpful. It also shows encouraging signs of the new hierarchy that was put in place this summer. They have set a precedent that they will only accept offers which they feel are fair, and they are sticking to it. They held out for more during the Jeremy Monga saga, and they have now stood their ground with Souttar.
