The Ukraine Automobile Federation has accused the FIA of setting a “dangerous precedent” by allowing Russia’s federation to open offices in Ukrainian territory. The FAU claims Russia’s federation is operating multiple offices in occupied parts of Ukraine. Russia began its full-scale invasion of the country in 2022.“This is a dangerous precedent that paves the way for member organisations to disregard other provisions of the statutes and requirements of the rules, potentially leading to chaos and jeopardising the FIA’s future as an institution,” said FAU president Oleksander Feldman in a letter to FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, according to the BBC. The FUA is also challenging the FIA’s recent reversal of its restrictions on Russians competing in motorsport while the war continues. “Russia continues full-scale aggression against Ukraine,” Feldman added. “Belarus continues to provide military support to Russia. Ukrainian people are still being killed every day. And Russian attacks become more and more brutal. “I don’t understand, and Ukrainian people and I know that all European people don’t understand what’s happened, why now we must make this policy softer.” F1 raced in Russia between 2014 and 2021. The race was cancelled in 2022 in reaction to the war in Ukraine, though the following year Ben Sulayem indicated he had opposed taking action against Russia.
