Liverpool will reportedly lower their asking price for Curtis Jones as Inter Milan prepare a new approach for the midfielder following a host of unsuccessful bids. Jones has been a priority target for Inter throughout the summer, but so far the Italian side’s offers have fallen short of Liverpool’s price tag. Most recently, The Athletic‘s James Horncastle reported that it had been indicated, via intermediaries, that Inter would be willing to pay €35 million (£29.9m). Until now, it had been maintained that Liverpool were seeking €40 million (£34.2m) for the only Scouser remaining in their first-team squad. But Fabrizio Romano now claims that Liverpool have “slightly lowered their request” and a deal can be struck for around the €35 million (£29.9m) mark. “After several failed attempts, because Liverpool always asked for €40 million, Liverpool as far as I understand have slightly lowered their request,” Romano explained on YouTube. “The feeling from those close to the operation is that Jones could be unlocked for around €35 million. “And this is new, because in these types of deals even these small financial margins can make a difference. “Inter are negotiating, working and they will make an offer in the coming hours.” With a difference of £4.3 million it is hardly a major loss for Liverpool, who have seen Jones enter the final year of his contract this summer. The 25-year-old was absent from the 3-2 friendly loss to Monaco on Sunday, though the official line is that he was unable to take part due to a hip issue. “It doesn’t look anything big but it didn’t make any sense to risk,” Andoni Iraola told LFCTV after the game. However, given the speculation around his future, his omission only further raised eyebrows – particularly now with all signs pointing to a move to Inter. Liverpool have positioned themselves as reluctant sellers when it comes to Jones, who made more appearances than in any previous campaign last time out (49) but could understandably be frustrated over his tally of starts (28). Not considered first choice in midfield and with his contract dwindling, he has explored his options, which also led to interest from both Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest. It remains to be seen whether, if Jones is sold, Liverpool will enter the market for another midfielder, having been named as strong suitors for Crystal Palace‘s Adam Wharton earlier in the summer. Mamadou Sangare was another target but has since join Brentford from Lens, while Monaco’s Lamine Camara is now on Palace’s radar.
