The semi–finals have finally arrived. Four contenders, each with pedigree and ambition, will throw everything into the fight for the NPL crown in 2026.
All four are giants of the competition — big clubs with strong followings, titles and heavy history.
The finalists will emerge from Oakleigh Cannons – South Melbourne and Hume City – Avondale.
On Friday night (11/09) at 7.30pm, Oakleigh Cannons host South Melbourne in the opening semi–final. A rivalry stretching back decades, built on passion, intensity and matches that have become part of the league’s folklore.
They walk onto the pitch as equals. Games like this don’t recognise favourites.
Oakleigh, having played one match fewer than South, will aim to settle quickly, find rhythm and avoid being caught by an early punch.
South, riding the momentum of their win over Alexandros, will enter with aggression and tempo, hoping to exploit any hesitation from the hosts.
Logic says it will be tight, decided in the details, low–scoring. But logic often evaporates once the whistle blows. Then it becomes a matter of heart, of passion — the qualities that win nights like Friday.
The second semi–final, Hume City v Avondale, follows on Saturday at 6.15pm.
VPL1
The VPL1 promotion play–offs also take place this week. Four clubs chasing the third ticket to the NPL.
Greek interest centres on Iraklis. Northcote face Bulleen Lions on Friday night (11/09). The winner meets the victor of Melbourne Victory U21 – Eltham Redbacks in the promotion final, where the club joining Melbourne Knights and Brunswick Juventus in the NPL will be decided.
VPL2
VPL2 also enters play–off mode. Two Greek Australian sides — Bayside Argonauts and Box Hill United — meet on Saturday night (12/09) with promotion to VPL1 at stake. The other semi–final is Essendon Royal – Keilor Park.
