Alessio Romagnoli’s future has taken another turn, with Atalanta emerging as a genuine destination as his proposed move to Al-Sadd continues to stall.
According to LaLazioSiamoNoi, relaying Corriere dello Sport, the defender remains a Lazio player, but his desire to leave Formello is stronger than ever.
His preferred route had been a switch to Qatar, one that would have spared him facing his boyhood club as an opponent while securing a final lucrative contract, but the deal with Al-Sadd has not gone through, with the Qatari side repeatedly asking him to wait.
With the player’s own timeline close to expiring, a resolution is expected in the coming days.
Sarri leads Atalanta’s push to convince Romagnoli to leave Lazio
Into that void has stepped Atalanta.
At Bergamo, Romagnoli would reunite with Maurizio Sarri, a coach who knows him well and rates him highly, a mutual admiration born of their strong defensive work together at Lazio.
That relationship makes the centre-back an enticing option for Sarri’s new-look side, and the coach is said to be personally leading efforts to secure his “yes.”
There are, though, moving parts. Atalanta must first offload some defenders to lighten the department before they can push the deal through, and no decision has yet come from the player.
What is clear is that Romagnoli wants out: despite his exemplary conduct since returning to the group, his relationship with the club is worn to the point that he would even remain in Serie A, joining a direct rival, just to leave Formello.
