Mikel Arteta praised the performance of Martin Odegaard in a 1-0 win for Arsenal against Napoli.
The Norwegian has been in top shape since he returned from a record-breaking World Cup for his nation. He scored in the 3-0 Community Shield victory against Manchester City, then netted in the 3-0 win over Coventry City and the 2-1 triumph over Chelsea on the weekend. A fourth goal of the season shows he is in confident mood, and the typical trickery from the club captain is also on display.
·‘He’s getting into those positions much more’
It is a far cry from the injury riddled year that Odegaard endured last term. His manager spoke to the media after the final whistle at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona to explain his hot form.
“We need the players with that mindset to decide the game, and to play with that personality, that an action might not happen, it's the next one, the next one, and keep insisting, keep taking chances and risks. He's getting into those positions much more in recent games, and now you feel he has this emotional state that he knows that the ball can go in, and he scored an incredible goal tonight.
“We have now a lot of players that can take the ball there and they can progress the ball much better than we did in the past. When that happens [Odegaard] needs to take different heights and angles and positions in order to disorganise the opponent, and he's done that really well tonight.
“First of all, he needs to be available, and last year he missed so many games through injuries. He's got that edge, and he's got now different relationships around him as well, and that helps, and now he can start to occupy some very different heights in the team, especially in the attacking phase, and when we get him into those positions, he’s a very dangerous player.”
