The former second-round pick arrived from college in 2022 and has steadily expanded his responsibilities. In 2025, during his last season with the Kansas City Chiefs, Cook recorded 50 solo tackles which ultimately lead to 85 tackes Those numbers underline his ability to contribute around the football. His tackling also gives Cincinnati another physical presence in the defensive backfield. Yet Cook’s value transcends traditional statistics. He can operate closer to the line while also handling responsibilities in coverage, creating versatility that could become especially valuable for the franchise. Hoard identified this defense as the biggest development of the summer. Meanwhile, the defense has players like Dexter Lawrence strengthening their operations. Lawrence comes in as an established interior presence and another leader on that side of the ball. Similarly, D.J. Turner could play a major role, having recorded significant improvements that could make Cook even more effective in his role. The Bengals already have the offensive firepower to compete with anyone. That offense has Burrow as the centerpiece, while Chase provides one of the league’s most dangerous receiving threats. Last season, Burrow played in only 8 games and threw for 1,809 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. Chase caught 125 passes, with 1,412 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns across 16 games. Those numbers show why Cincinnati’s defensive progress matters so much. While the offense is prolific, the defense must consistently close games against elite opponents. Cook could help provide that balance for the Bengals. His experience within the system would also reduce the adjustment period to the roster going forward.
