It has been a slightly quieter day at Everton, but perhaps that’s no bad thing after the madness of the last couple of weeks. There has still been plenty to chew over. The free-agent striker question refuses to disappear, we’ve looked at one player who seems to have slipped down David Moyes’ pecking order and attention is finally beginning to turn properly towards Saturday’s trip to Tottenham. Icardi story takes another step Mauro Icardi has become one of those stories that seems to move forward by about an inch every day. First he was offered to Everton, then reports suggested the club were considering him. Today brought another small development, with journalist Christian Vaquero claiming Everton could initiate contact over Icardi in the coming days. The important bit remains that no talks have yet taken place. We’re still some distance from Icardi holding up an Everton scarf. Martial open to Everton – but there’s a problem Anthony Martial’s name hasn’t disappeared either. A fresh report suggested the former Manchester United forward is open to an Everton move, although his wage demands could provide a fairly obvious obstacle. That led us into a broader look at the shrinking free-agent striker market. With options disappearing, the question is whether Everton take a chance now or ask Thierno Barry to shoulder the main No.9 burden until January. What has happened to Charly Alcaraz? Away from the striker hunt, we asked a question that has been bubbling away for a while: what exactly has happened to Charly Alcaraz? The Argentine did enough during his loan spell to earn a permanent move, but his involvement has dwindled since. He has barely featured so far this season and was an unused substitute against Manchester United. At 23, there’s plenty of time for that to change. Right now, though, he appears some way down Moyes’ pecking order. Maitland-Niles already gets it One player who has wasted little time making an impression is Ainsley Maitland-Niles. After his dramatic equaliser against United, the Deadline Day signing described Everton as a team of “fighters” where respect has to be earned. He’s been here for barely five minutes, but he appears to have worked Everton out pretty quickly. Everton need more than stability The Friedkins deserve credit for helping to stabilise a club that had spent years living dangerously financially. But today we argued that Everton need more than financial stability from whoever owns the club. Whether it’s TFG, new investors alongside them or somebody else further down the road, the next stage has to be getting the football operation right. Everton scout spotted in Porto There was an intriguing little story from Portugal too, with reports that Everton had a representative watching Porto’s Champions League meeting with City. There is no evidence they were there to watch any particular player, so our look at who the Toffees might have been watching was deliberately speculative. The summer window might be closed. The scouting, thankfully, isn’t. Tottenham come into view And finally, some actual football. Our early Tottenham v Everton preview looked ahead to Saturday’s trip to north London, where unbeaten Everton meet a Spurs side still searching for their first Premier League goal of the season. Moyes’ side have five points from three games. Tottenham have one. There will be team news, predicted XIs and plenty more before 5.30pm on Saturday.
