Ethan Ross: I'm ready to play key role in Falkirk's attack Ethan Ross reckons he has what it takes to be the spark that brings Falkirk’s attack to life in the Scottish Premiership this season. After two matches played, the Bairns are the only team left not to have scored a goal. John McGlynn’s side did however earn a positive point away to Motherwell on Sunday to banish the opening day defeat to St Mirren on home turf. And a clean sheet plus a promising second-half display going forward was enough to satisfy boss McGlynn and attacker Ross – who made a claim for a starting role going forward after a strong performance. The winger, 24, wasn’t set to start at Fir Park but he was drafted in to replace recent signing Joe Garner after he pulled up during the warm-up. Speaking after the 0-0 draw, Ross said: “The manager said it was night and day from last week. It was the application and effort we put into the game, he was happy with that. I think we can go up levels, though. The quality will come. But that hard work we put in has to be the base from which we progress. "We knew that we could take belief from how we played against Motherwell last season. We know how good they are, and although they have changed manager, they play a very similar style of football. They get bodies in the middle of the park and have a real threat up front with pace. “We put in so much work to nullify them and it was massive for us to come away with something. We’ll come to any ground and try to play our game and put our footprint on the match, and we did that today.” On his late introduction to the starting eleven, he added: “Sadly it wasn’t meant to be for Joe (Gardner). He pulled up in the warm-up with a slight issue. I’m not sure if it was a tight groin or tight hamstring. But whatever it was, I’m always ready to play, whether I’m starting or on the bench. So I was fully ready to come on and take my opportunity.” Ross, who joined Falkirk back in September 2023 initially on loan from ex-club Raith Rovers, was a mainstay in the team during the League One and Championship title successes. But he has found regular football hard to come by in the top flight, with an early season injury last term putting him down the pecking order. With star attackers Barney Stewart and Calvin Miller now departed, alongside the likes of loan duo Ben Broggio and Kyrell Wilson, Ross says that he can be Falkirk’s new talisman this season. "People will maybe say that we have some holes in the team now,” he said. “I feel I can take up that role and make it my own. I’m a different player to what Calvin was here, different traits, but I feel I can play a vital part for the team this season. I’ve just got to build on my own performances and hope the gaffer picks me. “That’s the type of player I want to be, I want to be the one that gets the fans off their seats. I want to take players on and I want to get shots off. Against Motherwell I’m disappointed I didn’t get more on target or get a goal. It’s obviously my first league start of the season and I’ll just need to build on that. That’s the type of player I am, just want to excite people.”
