Week 2 of the college football schedule only delivers a few ranked-versus-ranked matchups, headlined by Saturday’s clashes of the Michigan Wolverines vs. Oklahoma Sooners and the Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Texas Longhorns. Those are just two of the best games on the college football schedule this week, and it is time to make predictions for the matchups. Let’s jump right into our Week 2 college football predictions. Oklahoma Sooners 24, Michigan Wolverines 10 The Michigan Wolverines are coming off a ‘win’ that only strengthened the concerns surrounding quarterback Bryce Underwood. If the second-year passer is still struggling with his touch, decision-making and processing against the likes of Western Michigan, it’s hard to fathom how things would go any better in Week 2. The Oklahoma Sooners have one of the best defensive lines in college football and head coach Brent Venables is outstanding at creating a game plan each week to frustrate even the most experienced and poised college quarterback. Just a year ago, Michigan lost at Oklahoma because it went 3-for-14 on third downs with Underwood completing just 9-of-24 passes. While we do think the Wolverines will have some success on the ground, Oklahoma has the better defense and the gap between Underwood and John Mateer is as big as the distance between Oklahoma and Minnesota. BYU Cougars 31, Arizona Wildcats 21 The BYU Cougars are beginning to show that this passing game led by quarterback Bear Bachmeier can be just as difficult to stop as containing running back LJ Martin. That is bad news for the Arizona Wildcats, who lost 33-27 in double overtime at Arizona Stadium last season. In the last meeting, Martin and Bachmeier combined for 251 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns, though the Wildcats did pick off Bachmeier twice. While Arizona put up 383 total yards and 27 points in that contest, its offense also went 4-for-17 on third down. The raucous environment at LaVell Edwards Stadium gives BYU another edge and with the improvements we have seen from Bachmeier as a passer, we believe the Cougars win this one by multiple scores. Boise State Broncos 35, Memphis Tigers 27 The Boise State Broncos not only had to face No. 2 Oregon last Saturday in Eugene, but their travel plans were significantly impacted by weather. Despite it all, quarterback Maddux Madsen put up 3 touchdowns against one of the best defenses in the Big Ten Conference. Now, Boise State returns home to welcome a Memphis Tigers defense that allowed 460 total yards (291 through the air) to UNLV and then surrendered 434 total yards (325 passing yards and 10.8 ypa) to Arkansas State. The Broncos defense showed enough resolve against Oregon to make us believe they can get a few stops against Memphis. As long as that happens, Boise State can win this one comfortably with Maddux throwing 4 touchdowns. Tennessee Volunteers 31, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 20 Faizon Brandon looked like a future star in his first collegiate start, but we’ll keep in mind that the true freshman’s success came against Furman. What feels like the biggest difference-maker in this matchup is the advantage the Tennessee Volunteers will have at the line of scrimmage. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets mustered less than 20 rushing yards in the final three quarters versus Colorado, routinely getting destroyed in the trenches. Meanwhile, Tennessee defensive coordinator Jim Knowles has standout defensive tackle Xavier Gilliam (5 TFLs and 3 sacks) to pair with the return of linebacker Arion Carter. We’ve got the Vols rolling into Atlanta and taking full advantage of the Yellow Jackets in a transition year. The meeting last year between these two teams was a defensive slugfest, but we attribute part of that to quarterbacks Arch Manning and Julian Sayin being so inexperienced. They are now Heisman Trophy contenders with All-American wide receivers (Texas’ Cam Coleman and Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith) at their disposal. We know that the crowd in Arlington will be insane and the Longhorns are slight favorites in this game. Ultimately, we think that Ohio State’s ability to run the football more effectively paired with a huge return by freshman Legend Bey puts the Buckeyes in position to win this one.
