Leeds United head to Stamford Bridge in the EFL Cup against Chelsea on Wednesday night, with Daniel Farke confirming injury news. Attention turns this week to the EFL Cup as Leeds face another away game at the start of this season. This time, it’s against Chelsea. Having confidently seen off Nottingham Forest, United face a significant test in one of the favourites for the competition in Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea. Chelsea v Leeds United: Injury news confirmed in Dan James boost The only bit of team news that Daniel Farke had to confirm was an update on Dan James’ fitness after being an unused sub away at Brighton. It was revealed by Farke that the winger had struggled with back issues over the weekend. It meant he wasn’t ready to make an impact off the bench versus the Seagulls. However, in spite of a somewhat fast turnaround, the winger is likely to be available at Stamford Bridge. Farke confirmed he’s optimistic the Welsh speedster will make the squad. “Joe Rodon obviously a a long-term injury. Little question mark behind Daniel James, he reported in the warm-up at Brighton some issues with his back and hamstring,” Farke explained, per the YEP. “Scan results good, no new injury. He just had an individual session today which was okay. We have two more sessions, one this afternoon and light session tomorrow morning. If he comes through this then he’s available. Little question mark but carefully optimistic.” The Leeds boss was asked for further insight into James’ start to the season and his recovery. “Important for DJ that he had a proper pre-season and found confidence in his body,” Farke continued. “First appearances were promising, I liked his performances. A little setback of course is not good for the head, I think it will give him reassurance that the scan results were really good. “Perhaps to do with a long trip to Brighton with some delays, sometimes this can be a bit complicated in terms of the back. Small details can make a big influence on their body. We can’t risk any injury with travel routines so have to do it in the most professional way. For DJ, it’s good he has the assurance there’s no new injury.” Strong Leeds United setup expected away to Chelsea after positive injury news It’s good to see that we’re starting this season without any sort of injury crisis, Rodon’s setback aside. James needed a good pre-season behind him after such a rough first campaign back in the top flight, so the fact this isn’t an injury is good news. Whether or not he starts remains to be seen, but I’m encouraged by what he offers at wing-back. He’s clearly evolved more into that role throughout pre-season since cameos there last term. I’m expecting a strong team at Stamford Bridge tomorrow night, though. Farke wants to go there and win, as opposed to making up the numbers.
