Leeds United have been alerted after Premier League rivals Newcastle United failed to land Marseille midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. The 31-year-old seemed to be on the brink of a €15million return to the Premier League only for the move to break down amid reports he had rejected the chance to move to St James' Park. Reports in France suggest Marseille were ‘counting on the transfer to boost their coffers’ in a straitened financial climate, with Footmercato journalist Sebastien Denis relaying ‘monumental anger from [owner] Frank McCourt after Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's about-face and his refusal to join Newcastle.’ Denis adds: “For Frank McCourt, everyone must now take their responsibilities and place the future of OM above individual interests.” That is where Leeds come in, they are not interested in Hojberg but instead his Marseille team-mate Igor Paixao – and have been since last summer. The 25-year-old left Feyenoord for OM in August, for a fee reported to be around €35m. The Brazilian scored 12 goals and assisted seven others in 42 games, predominantly as a left winger, including two in a 4-0 Champions League win over Ajax last September. It has been reported OM want to ‘cash in on’ Paixao and while he seems to want to stay with the Ligue 1 outfit circumstances could see him sold before the transfer window closes. Having been keen on him before they signed Noah Okafor last term, United could come back in having reportedly held talks with his representatives. As things stand Daniel Farke does need to boost his options out wide, with Okafor the front-runner on the left, and with Wilfried Gnonto and Daniel James yet to stamp their authority on the Premier League.
