Head coach Peter Bosz reflected on PSV’s performance following the loss in the friendly match against Villarreal CF (1-3). The head coach felt his team gave away too many chances and lost possession too often. At the same time, he also saw a bright spot in Amir Bouhamdi and remained confident in the team. “These guys have long since shown that they’re capable of much better.” How do you look back on this match? “We gave away too many chances tonight, and that’s bad. The 1-3 score might not even suggest it, but there could have—or should have—been many more. We started the match well, but that completely fell apart afterward. Kovář kept us in the game quite a few times after that, because we really weren’t playing well.” What do you think went wrong? “Lists of excuses don’t count in football. We’ve seen what went wrong tonight, and we’re going to address it. This shouldn’t happen to us, so we need to learn from it. I do have an idea of what the problem is. Tomorrow I’ll take a calm look back at the match, but one thing is certain: we have to do better. And we can do it, because many of the players who were on the field tonight have already shown that they can reach that level.” How do you explain that it fell apart so quickly after a good start? “When you play with high pressure, as we do, you have to stay with your man or dare to keep covering him. We didn’t do either of those things well enough today. On top of that, we turned the ball over way too quickly. And when you lose the ball, you have to go after it full force right away." A bright spot in this match was Amir Bouhamdi. What did you think of his substitute appearance? “That really lifted my spirits. I enjoyed watching him because he played well and with ease. That was great to see.” What do you think of Kovář’s performance? “I think it’s a shame that he’s selling himself short, because there were two moments where he didn’t look good. At the same time, I’m not exaggerating when I say he also made ten outstanding saves. That’s what makes it even more unfortunate. Other than that, he really played a very good game in goal." What did you think of Alassane Pléa? “He’s still missing just those last few percent. He himself says he still needs to improve by thirty percent. If you haven’t played for twelve months, you need time to make a full comeback. I’m especially glad he’s back on the field. Now it’s up to him to take the next steps, just as Ruben is doing as well. At times, you can already see that extra quality, for example in his runs into space and in his duels with opponents.” Do you enjoy having a practice match like this? “No, not at all. These guys have long since shown that they can do much better, but now they have to prove it on the field. Next week the real work begins, and AZ is waiting right away. So things have to improve by then.” Will some of the players be back in time for the match against AZ next weekend? “A few players will also play against FC Eindhoven on Tuesday. After that, we’ll assess each player individually to see how everyone is doing and what steps we can take leading up to Sunday.”
