Nestory Irankunda has landed in Portugal for his medical as his much hyped move to Sporting Lisbon inches closer. News had gone quiet since that report a week ago, until Irankunda was spotted arriving in Lisbon for an immediate glimpse of the scrutiny and expectation that will face him at the club that unearthed Cristiano Ronaldo. “Yes I’m very happy,” he beamed, bombarded by reporters. He added: “It means a lot, I’m very happy.” When asked a flurry of questions, from whether he will pull out his Michael Jackson celebration, to which position he plays, Irankunda took the hysteria in his stride. “I’m an attacker, I play everywhere up top.” How would he descibe himself? “Very fast!” On the weekend, the Watford player was spotted one last time with fans at his Championship club, who he joined last season and played 42 times for, scoring four goals. Irankunda’s move to Sporting picked up steam once Geovany Quenda sealed his $77 million move to Chelsea in the Premier League. The Portuguese club are renowned for identifying and developing talent, with a penchant for attacking players including Bruno Fernandes, Nani and more recently Victor Gyökeres and Matheus Nunes. After finishing second, six points adrift to Porto last season, and two points ahead of Jose Mourinho’s Benfica, they kicked off their Primeira Liga campaign with a 2-2 away draw against Estrela Amadora last Sunday (AEST). They face Vitoria S.C. on Saturday at Estadio Jose Alvalade.
