Fan column: Wolves have work to do in the transfer window Wolves fan columnist John Lalley has his say. Uncanny really; Dan Bentley’s outstretched leg to save the penalty against Port Vale, eerily reminiscent of Phil Parkes reacting similarly facing a spot-kick against Ferencvaros during the UEFA Cup semi-final in the same North Bank goalmouth all those years ago. He had done exactly the same in the first leg in Budapest. Parkes would have wholly approved of Bentley’s improvisation such was his immense passion for the club. Woven into the fabric of Molineux, Lofty won’t be forgotten. He rests easy in the club’s Hall of Fame as a true Wolves’ legend. There were a lot of familiar faces on the field against Vale last week and a few more sitting out the game as well. Some of these players might just have overstayed their welcome. Serious realignment of the squad was promised at the conclusion of last season. Talk of significant business being conducted rapidly was mandated as a priority. Some vibrant new blood was both required and expected. Making room for potential arrivals, it was understood that a proportion of last year’s failing squad would be seeking pasture new. The summer window will close on September 1; as things stand, Wolves have recruited two vastly experienced players on free transfers and paid money for a winger from Belgium who is currently injured and will need time to assimilate to English football. Matt Doherty was released leaving Joao Gomes as the only asset we have received funds for. This opens up a real opportunity for Fer Lopez despite being a different operator to the Brazilian. The World Cup may have slowed the process of transactions but if Wolves are to make serious inroads in The Championship, further recruitment is not just desirable, it is essential. Similarly, it needs to be rapidly resolved whether definite potential first picks such as Jose Sa, Ladislav Krejci and Santi Bueno - and maybe David Moller Wolfe - are departing or retaining a commitment to the club. Options in defence remain problematic; uncertainty lingers, the gremlins from last season not addressed. Should Toti Gomes and Yerson Mosquera be paired together, effort and commitment won’t be found wanting, that’s a given, but both are prone to bouts of eccentricity. So too Nasser Djiga, returned from an erratic loan at Rangers. Has he a role to play? If Krejci or S.Bueno do depart, Wolves simply have to strengthen and wisely too. Extended play-off spots are available this season but Peixoto is aiming higher. Realistic? We are about to find out.
