A worrisome new report suggests Nick Bosa’s availability will be a question mark for the San Francisco 49ers throughout the 2026 NFL season.
Last season was one of the most frustrating 49ers fans have had in some time as they dealt with drama and several major injuries. The most notable was a five-time Pro Bowler suffering a season-ending ACL tear in Week 3. However, he will be back in 2026. Well, sort of.
During his conversation with 49ers media at training camp on Tuesday, head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that Bosa is dealing with tendinitis in his surgically repaired right knee. He noted that the issue was “a pretty normal thing with ACLs” following surgery to repair them. However, he also added that the team will need to be cautious with him from week to week.
In a follow-up report, Bleacher Report’s James Palmer revealed that this is not the first time Bosa has dealt with tendinitis in his knee. However, that was supposed to have been addressed.
“The tendinitis that Bosa is dealing with actually stems from the first ACL injury he sustained in high school on this knee. Bosa talked about it in length to Albert Breer. ‘I had a little tendinitis from my high school ACL, and he cleaned that up while he [fixed] my ACL.'”

Could Nick Bosa miss games for the San Francisco 49ers in 2026?
Knee tendinitis is when tiny tears and irritation emerge in the tendons connecting the knee to the shin bone. It isn’t an uncommon issue that can be treated easily and usually does not require surgery to fix. However, there is a very important element of recovery treatment, and that is rest.
That means there will be many weeks between games where the 49ers will need to hope that rest is enough to heal Bosa for that Sunday’s game. In some cases, that should work. However, in such a physical and violent sport like football, there is a good chance that may not always be the case. Then you add in the fact that this is the second time he has torn that ligament in his right knee, and there is certainly reason to worry.
It would not be surprising if Bosa’s availability is a question all season long, San Francisco gets overly cautious and has to rest him multiple times so he can be in uniform come playoff time. The 2022 Defensive Player of the Year has two years and $65 million left on his contract after this season. However, there is an out in the deal before the 2027 campaign.
