The wrestling world is settling down for another installment of WWE’s Golden Era staple. Saturday Night’s Main Event has shifted 24 hours, but the nostalgia remains the same. State Farm Arena will be packed to the rafters as Atlanta is set to host another of WWE’s weekend spectacles in the form of WWE Sunday Night’s Main Event. Four matches have been announced for Sunday Night’s Main Event, ranging from grudge matches and contests to determine the future of WWE to a chaotic 6-woman tag match and a chance for the world to see an annoying talent get his. The move to Sunday night has been interesting, and WWE has stacked the deck to make Sunday Night’s Main Event a memorable evening of professional wrestling. As great as the lineup is, Sunday Night’s success hinges on the wrestlers’ ability and how the office books the matches. How will the night pan out, and will it live on in memory? The show is ready to begin. Baron Corbin v Lil Yatchy (2.5/5) This match had no business being this entertaining. Yatchy was going to be led around by Corbin; everyone knew this, but the rap artist conjured up a great reaction from the crowd. Outside of a mistimed crossbody, there wasn’t a bad-looking spot. Baron Corbin took great care to make Lil Yatchy look like a legitimate threat, and the finish was a creative way to get to the next match of the night. Baron Corbin v Trick Williams (United States Championship Match) (3/5) Once Lil Yatchy secured his 5 minutes, Trick Williams immediately made his way to the ring for his title shot. Trick Williams and Baron Corbin have battled before, so there was a welcome familiarity when they squared off. The crowd was super hot for Trick Williams, and their energy carried this match through a slow opening few minutes. After a slower pace, Williams and Corbin picked it up. They traded high-impact moves, taking the physicality to another level from previous meetings. The few false finishes they sprinkled in towards the end were fantastic, and both could have been the real finish. It’s honestly a bit disappointing that WWE put the United States Championship back on Trick Williams so soon. Baron Corbin was a great heel champion, and that dynamic had more legs. It was still an entertaining double match to start WWE Sunday Night’s Main Event. Oba Femi v Bron Breakker (3/5) The future of WWE is on the line when the two biggest rising stars lock horns. This was a big hoss battle that everyone was salivating over, and the crowd was on fire when both men made their entrance. Neither man could afford to look weak here, with WWE doing a great job making sure both got their work in. It was nice to see an extended period of dominance from Breakker and Femi, which allowed the other man to showcase their selling skills. Wrestling is a two-way street, and seeing the men pegged as the future showing maturity on the defensive side was fantastic. Everything was going great for Breakker and Femi until the Vision made themselves known on Sunday Night’s Main Event. It was not a shock that WWE was going to add a screwy finish, but that still doesn’t mean it wasn’t a letdown. Seeing a definitive ending to this great match would have been a nice touch. Bronson Reed making his return, and looking incredible, by the way, was fun and will make this program stronger. Charlotte Flair, Alexa Bliss &Tatum Paxley v Jade Cargill, B-Fab & Michin (3/5) The issues between these women have been progressing for a time now, but nothing has been drawn out to the point of boredom. Tatum Paxley’s addition was a nice way to add freshness to the program. Paxley was great when the match began, taking most of the offense and taking out all members of the opposing team. This was a traditional 6-person tag match, which wasn’t a bad thing. The wrestling was serviceable, keeping the fans interested throughout. Alexa Bliss was the perfect face in peril, and the close call tags that they pulled off were very well done. Naturally, this was always going to be Charlotte Flair’s match. She has a genuine connection with the audience, and her hot tag got a great reaction. Flair was well on her way to victory when Tatum Paxley’s fandom ruined things. It was a nice touch having the match end this way, possibly leading to a heel turn from one of the three babyfaces. Randy Orton v Cody Rhodes (3.75/5) In a highly anticipated rematch from WrestleMania, Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes continued their story at WWE Sunday Night’s Main Event. The crowd was hot for both men’s entrances, and the botched sneak attack by Orton was a lot of fun. It allowed both men to brawl around the arena before officially starting the match. For two men who have faced off a lot, it’s important to see them have a different start to the match. As expected, this was a methodical showdown. Orton likes to work at a slower pace, but the intensity of every move helped to keep the match going. The crowd was buying everything these two men were selling, and they showed great character work. Randy Orton teasing Cody Rhodes’ wife was a nice addition, adding to the personal nature of their issues. The successive ref bumps were a necessary part of this match. Both men got their chance to win, and Cody Rhodes’ vicious streak emerged. The heel leanings of Rhodes are starting to flush their way to the surface, and it was an excellent way to work towards the finish. Kudos to Orton for getting a ton of color, and then begging off of Rhodes. Wonderful heel work from Randy Orton, playing off sympathy to get the cheap victory. This program is far from over, and hopefully leads to both men entering Hell in a Cell.
