The Minnesota Vikings aren’t saying goodbye to Harrison Smith just yet. After an offseason filled with speculation that the longtime safety could walk away from football, Smith has decided to return to Minnesota for his 15th NFL season. The Vikings announced the move Saturday, keeping one of the most accomplished defensive players in franchise history in purple for another year. Smith, 37, is expected to sign a one-year contract worth $12.25 million that could reach $16.25 million with incentives, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo. Theo Jackson has dealt with a leg injury, rookie Jakobe Thomas missed significant time with a back issue and veteran Jamal Adams suffered a season-ending torn quadriceps. The Vikings selected Thomas out of Miami in the third round and expected players such as Josh Metellus, Jackson and Jay Ward to take on larger responsibilities. Now, Smith is back to stabilize the group. The six-time Pro Bowler appeared headed toward retirement late last season. However, Smith never officially announced his retirement after the Vikings terminated his contract in March as part of a salary-cap procedure. His return gives him another opportunity to add to an already impressive résumé. Smith has recorded 39 interceptions and 21.5 sacks during his career. He is one of only six defensive backs in NFL history with at least 35 interceptions and 20 sacks, joining Hall of Famers Charles Woodson, Larry Wilson, Ronde Barber, LeRoy Butler and Brian Dawkins. Originally selected in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Notre Dame, Smith immediately became a centerpiece of Minnesota’s defense.
