While the current crop of midfielders are extremely talented and good on the ball, De Zerbi requires a tough-tackling No.6 who’d bring balance to the side. Sano, in that regard, would be ideal for the Lilywhites. Since arriving from J1 league club Kashima Antlers in the summer of 2024, the 25-year-old has been a mainstay in Mainz’s midfield. He has made 84 appearances across two seasons, chipping in with two goals and five assists. He could become the glue in Spurs’ midfield, complementing creative talents such as James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Tonali. The defensive midfielder caught the eye during Japan’s admirable 2026 World Cup campaign. Sano’s stock soared when he scored in the 2-1 defeat to Brazil in the Round of 32, with his overall performance catching the attention of several clubs across Europe. With Arsenal, Liverpool and several other clubs vying for his signature, Spurs must try to add Sano to their midfield ranks if both Bergvall and Sarr depart.
