Coventry City have enquired about England international Angel Gomes, according to L'Equipe. The 25-year-old midfielder is currently playing for Marseille, after signing for The Olympians in June 2025. A look at Angel Gomes' career to date Gomes came through the Manchester United academy as a highly-rated prospect, making his debut for the senior team in 2017. The midfielder would go on to play five times for The Red Devils in the Premier League before leaving the club in 2020, joining Ligue 1 side Lille. Following a season-long loan at Portuguese club Boavista, Gomes would become a regular fixture in the Lille side, going on to make 105 league appearances between 2020 and 2025, scoring four goals. His impressive performances in Ligue 1 earned Gomes a call-up to the England national team under the management of Lee Carsley. Gomes was used by Carsley as a deep-lying playmaker, acting as the six in an attacking system, similar to how he was utilised by then Lille boss Bruno Genesio. Following the conclusion of the 2024-25 season and the expiration of his contract, Gomes left Lille to join fellow French side Marseille. At Marseille, Gomes has been utilised as more of an attacking midfielder, where he scored in consecutive games in November 2025 against Auxerre and Brest. From late November onwards though, Gomes would barely make it off the Marseille bench, and would subsequently be loaned out to Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers, as they looked to improve their squad in a bid to stay up. During his time at Wolves, Gomes made 12 league appearances, and failed to score as the West Midlands side were relegated to the Championship. Where could Gomes fit in Frank Lampard's system? Before the 2025-26 season, it would seem obvious for Angel Gomes to come into a team like Coventry and play as a six as part of the double pivot in Frank Lampard's fluid 4-2-3-1, but his time as an attacking midfielder at Marseille gives Lampard another option if he was to bring the 25-year-old to the Coventry Building Society Arena. With Gomes, the most important thing is to utilise his passing ability, and with Matt Grimes already in the side, that creates a slight selection headache for the head coach. Gomes would expect to start if he signs, as he has much more top-flight experience than the likes of Grimes and Victor Torp, but it could be a risk to break up a successful duo. Frank Onyeka is another option in the midfield, and could pair nicely with Gomes as a playmaker and ball-winner partnership. The other midfield option is new signing Caleb Yirenkyi, who is expected to receive a strong amount of game time after signing for a club record fee of £23.1 million. Whoever he may line up alongside, Angel Gomes would be a big get for the Sky Blues as they look to build a team strong enough to compete in the Premier League.
