Shock as Wigan Athletic Premier League loan is scrapped - before season even starts!
Hindolo Mustapha's season-long loan spell at Wigan Athletic has been ended – before it even had chance to start.
The 20-year-old attacking midfielder only joined Latics from Premier League Crystal Palace last month.
However, that deal has been cancelled, and the player has instead joined League One rivals Notts County.
County director of football Richard Montague said: “Hindolo was one of our top targets this summer, so we’re delighted to have him with us.
“He’s powerful, skilful and direct – and capable of scoring different types of goals.
“Hindolo needs a settled home to really establish himself in the men’s game and that’s what we’ll be providing him with.”
Mustapha had been hoping to kickstart his career at Wigan after disappointing loan spells at 1 FC Nurnberg and West Bromwich Albion.
“I am more than happy - I am really excited to get going and show what I can do in a Wigan Athletic shirt," he said after putting pen to paper.
“It’s a big football club, and I believe I can come here and really kick on.
“The gaffer seems very genuine, and his vision really excites me. I am really looking forward to working with him.
“On the ball, I like to make things happen. I want to excite fans and get bums off seats.”
However, the words of Latics boss Gary Caldwell sadly proved to be prophetic.
“Hindo is a player that I have tracked for a number of years, and I think he’s in a really good moment now to show what he can do," he said last month.
“He’s had a couple of difficult loans, which I believe can bring the best out of players. I think he needs a home where he feels support from myself, the staff, his team-mates and the supporters.
“On his day, he’s a player who has massive quality in the final third, and I’m sure he will be a massive fan favourite if they get behind him and show him the support he needs to be successful."
Mustapha’s coach at 1 FC Nurnberg, Germany legend Miroslav Klose, had previously been scathing in assessment of the player during his time over there.
“He has something I like...that’s why I’ll support him, always up to a certain point,” Klose told BILD. “But we brought him in because he has to perform here.
"It’s not like in London, where he can walk through the city and go shopping. Maybe it’s a little different in Nuremberg.
"We need time to settle in, but it won’t work without him. He has to know where our limits are, where everything that starts with discipline comes in.”
Latics host Mustapha’s new club on December 29, and travel to Meadow Lane on April 3.
His departure has added to Caldwell’s ‘to-do’ list ahead of the transfer deadline at the beginning of September.
Max Power, Connor Barrett, Sonny Perkins, Jeremiah Chilokoa-Mullen, Akeel Higgins, Joe Walsh, Ryan Trevitt and Archie Harris are the eight summer signings to date, with Chelsea wonderkid Reggie Walsh expected to join this week on a season-long loan.
