LARNE suffered a 2-1 extra time defeat tonight against Iberia 1999 in their Europa League third qualifying round second leg in Tbilisi.
Iberia 1999 now face into a two-legged contest against either Scottish Premiership giants Rangers or Jagellonia Bialystock of Poland in the next round, with Rangers trailing 2-1 from the first leg, and they lock horns tomorrow evening.
Larne on the other hand drop into the Uefa Conference League play-off round where they will play either Lincoln Red Imps from Gibraltar or Omonia of Cyprus for a place in the league phase.
The first leg, played last Tuesday evening at Inver Park, finished all square with neither side able to find the net on the night and they had to settle for a 0-0 tie.
Vakho Bedoshvili grabbed the first goal of the encounter on Tuesday evening after 74 minutes to put the home side in front and in control of the contest.
The lead was short lived however as Larne’s response was rapid and they hit back instantly. Dan Bent saw his effort on goal blocked but the ball ricochet out to James Simpson who found the net to level things up.
With the away goals rule, which would have seen Larne qualify, no longer in play, extra was going to be required to separate the two teams.
The defining goal arrived 12 minutes into the addition time, with Nika Sikharulashvili striking home and Larne just couldn’t get an equalising goal to bring the game to penalties.
