Juventus and AC Milan are both hoping to enter a new and more successful era, but they have taken very different approaches. After years of delegating, the American businessman has decided to take the reins of the club directly, getting more involved and hands-on, and becoming more present in Italy. Contrasting approaches At Continassa, the change was primarily organisational. Carnevali didn’t centralise power, but rebuilt a clear chain of command. He entrusted the sporting area to Ricky Massara, retained figures considered valid (Marco Ottolini), and left the work of sports policy to Giorgio Chiellini. The idea is simple: fewer algorithms as the ultimate guide and more distributed expertise. Data remains a tool, not the core of the project. At Milan, however, the path was the opposite. After the disappointment of last season, Cardinale scrapped the previous structure, appointed Massimo Calvelli as CEO, and, most importantly, personally sought Ruben Amorim. From that moment on, Milan became increasingly ‘Cardinale-centric’ with over €150m invested in the summer window, personally overseeing negotiations and constant discussions with Amorim, as well as being a constant presence at Milanello. Yesterday, Milan’s owner attended training, had lunch with the coach and management, and attended (unexpectedly) the press conference. Today he’ll be in Turin for the match against Juventus, and then in Rome for the game versus Lazio. Unlike Carnevali, who delegates, Cardinale is very much the director. Then, it will be up to the pitch to decide which of the models will be able to bring one of the two clubs back to the top as quickly as possible.
